If your home or commercial building recently flooded due to storm damage or some sort of plumbing issues, you're probably unsure of the next step. Not only are you worried about property damage from the water, but you also have to worry about mold in your home or business. Mold can affect indoor air quality, can cause significant property damage and can cause a foul smell that even the best deodorization techniques can't get rid of! Follow these tips if you're dealing with residential or commercial mold.
Get Rid of Moisture
This is the very first step! Before the mold can be properly addressed, as much moisture as possible needs to be removed. If there is standing water, it can be dangerous to walk into your home or commercial property, so please make sure you can safely enter the building or structure.
Protect Yourself
You just never really know what can be floating around in standing water that can hurt you. For example, electrical wiring. You don't want to endure an electrical shock. Once you know you can safely enter, PROTECT YOURSELF by wearing protective clothing, such as gloves and a face mask.
Hire a Professional
The best thing you can do is leave it to the experts. Rely on a team of professionals to help get your home or business back in tip-top shape. Experts can come in and assess the true extent of the damage and help ensure all of the molds is properly remediated. We promise it could save you a lot of time, money and headaches in the future. Visit www.SERVPROnortheastdeltalands.com for more information on mold removal.
Fireplaces should not be used as furnaces. Use a fireplace for a short-duration fire — no longer than five hours.
Keep the glass open to allow air to be drawn up to cool the chimney, but keep the screen closed to prevent sparks from jumping onto the carpeting.
Never leave a fire unattended when children are in the house. Adults, even if near, should not allow children to play near or with fire tools and equipment.
Open a window when using the fireplace to prevent the room from becoming smoky. The air coming in from the window will go up the chimney.
Before making a fire, open the glass doors, pull aside the screen curtains, and place the kindling, newspaper and logs inside. Next, open the damper and a window. The window needs to be open only a few inches. You can check to make sure the smoke will go up the chimney properly by lighting a match, quickly blowing it out and watching the smoke to see whether it's going up and out.
Keep a nonflammable rug (available at fireplace-supply stores) in front of the fireplace so that sparks won't melt or otherwise damage your carpeting.
Use fireplace tools to handle burning logs. Never use your hands.
Use a chimney cap to prevent water damage, to keep animals from nesting and to keep debris from blocking the chimney and causing carbon monoxide to flow into the house. Use a spark arrester to help prevent sparks from flying out, which could start a fire on the roof or lawn.
Glass doors may develop tough stains from flames and heat. To clean them, make sure the glass doors are cool, then scrape off any thick gunk deposits with a razor blade. Add a squirt of liquid dishwashing detergent to a bucket of warm water, or add a cup of vinegar to a gallon of water. Spray or sponge the cleaner on, and then wipe it away with newspaper (which is lint-free). Another option is to buy glass cleaner at a fireplace store.
Fireplace coals can remain hot enough to start a fire for up to three days, so always wait at least that long before removing the ashes. At that point, close the damper to prevent cold air in the flue from stirring up excess dust while you're removing the ashes. Be sure to wear a dust mask and open a window in the same room as the fireplace to prevent negative air pressure. Use a shovel to scoop the ashes into a metal container. Store the container far from combustible materials and surfaces and wood floors.
Never use a vacuum to clean up ashes, because live coals may remain in those ashes.
Have a certified chimney sweep inspect and clean the chimney when necessary. Have him show you how to check it yourself, too. The chimney should be checked at least once a year or after about 80 fires.
Shine brass fireplace utensils with Worcestershire sauce and a toothbrush.
Clean the firebox (the area where the logs burn) at least once a week during the months you use it, when ash builds up. Leave about an inch of ash because it acts as insulation, allowing the coals to heat faster and retain the heat easier. Keep the firebox completely clean during the months when the fireplace is not in use.
To clean an exterior slate hearth, wash, dry and coat it with lemon oil every six weeks to make it shine. For cleaning exterior brick hearths, buy a brick cleaner at a fireplace shop.
Water damage in the kitchen is something that homeowners often forget to consider as they tend to associate water damage with bathrooms and laundry rooms. Unfortunately, water damage in your kitchen is typically hard to recognize due to the various smells already in that area. From the kitchen sink to the dishwasher and from the refrigerator to the freezer, there are many potential water leaking hazards inside of the kitchen. Since detecting moisture in the kitchen is difficult, but it is important to understand the most effective ways to prevent water damage in the kitchen.
Water damage can arise at any moment in your home. In the kitchen, water damage is most often found due to the following:
Dishwashers
Refrigerators
Countertops and Sinks
Dishwashers will sometimes malfunction, causing blockage of the main filter and thus causing a leak and eventual water damage. To prevent this, make sure that you are regularly checking the base of the dishwasher and looking for any collection of excess water. Also, look out for any leaks in the dishwasher which might be caused by an improperly sealed hose. Refrigerators often cause water damage because they are rarely moved. To prevent a potential water problem, be sure to occasionally check behind your refrigerator for any water. Finally, countertops and sinks are obviously exposed to water each and every day. To prevent water damage in these areas, check under your sink for any pooling water and make sure that the grout on your countertops is intact, as this is a sign of water damage.
Kitchen repairs for water damage can be costly and annoying. Not only will you have to pay to fix the problem, but it will disrupt your day-to-day routine since the kitchen is the focal point of most homes. In addition, mold growth is a threat when kitchen water damage goes undetected. As such, be sure to keep the above tips in mind to prevent water damage in your kitchen.
SERVPRO understands that using the proper equipment makes a measurable difference in reducing claims loss expense. When time matters, technology and equipment must be counted on to perform. We at SERVPRO will answer your call with fast action, exceptional equipment, and trained, uniformed professionals. Certainly, the right tool for the job is vital to timely mitigation, but perhaps more important, we are water damage professionals that thoroughly understand how to dry a structure and personal property effectively.
Detection Equipment
Scoping involves locating the areas of the structure affected by water and defining the extent to which the structure and contents have absorbed moisture. Moisture detection devices are also used to verify that an environment has been dried thoroughly.
Moisture Sensors are used to detect moisture in carpets, baseboards, and walls.
Moisture Meters are used to determine the actual moisture content of various materials.
Thermohygrometers measure both temperature and relative humidity.
Extraction Equipment
The most effective method of removing moisture from a structure is extraction. This is why it is critical to respond quickly to a water damage and to provide emergency mitigation services. When the water is extracted quickly, the environment can usually be dried much faster.
Air Moving Equipment
Air movers are used in water damage restoration to enhance evaporation at the surface level, thereby reducing drying time. As airflow at the surface level increases, the moisture in the air increases. The moisture is then eliminated via the use of dehumidification equipment.
Dehumidification Equipment
By extracting water vapor from the air, dehumidifiers lower the relative humidity, which in turn increases the rate of evaporation. In a water damaged structure, dehumidifiers pull in moist, humid air and then discharge dry, warm air. The dry air acts like a sponge, absorbing moisture from wet materials.

Fire damage to your commercial business can be catastrophic. It does not matter what your business does, it can mean downtime, loss of goods, costly equipment loss, loss of property, or worse. A fire can quickly move through a building and even put your team at risk. If you are not prepared it can be a situation that escalates faster than you are ready to handle. Good planning can help ensure that a fire does not happen or if it does, how it can be handled quickly and effectively. Below the United States Fire Administration has listed the top five leading causes of a commercial fire.
Top causes of fires in commercial buildings
According to data from the United States Fire Administration, between 2006 and 2015, the top causes of fires in commercial buildings were:
Cooking
Cooking is a huge danger, and it was a culprit behind 30,900 fires within the past decade. This is why it is so important to install fire alarms and a sprinkler system in your kitchen to prevent against the worst!
Unintentional and Careless Behavior
This is a broad category. Unintentional and careless behavior, better known as accidents, caused more than 10,900 fires. While it’s hard to stop people from being careless, business owners and property managers can’t afford to be.
Arson
Intentionally set fires represented 9,800 of the total fires in these properties.
Electrical malfunction
Problems with the electricity or wiring in a building caused around 7,000 fires in the past decade.
Heating problems
Problematic HVAC systems are the culprit behind about 6,000 commercial fires nationwide.
Trust that SERVPRO keeps in mind that time down for your business, is money lost. So our team will work around the clock to make sure it is “Like it never even happened,” and your business is back up and running!
Have you had a fire in your home? "Devastating" is an understatement when experiencing the chaos of a fire in your home. Not only is it difficult to deal with the loss, but the clean-up can be, too. If it is a small isolated fire, getting the area cleaned and repaired should be a priority! The first thing to consider is the ash and smoke damage. These can lead to corrosion, unpleasant odor, and discoloration. Getting ash and smoke cleaned up immediately will prevent any of these from leading to an even larger problem. Take immediate action by following these steps if you find yourself handling the aftermath of a house fire: 1. Contact your insurance company. 2. Contact your local fire restoration company. 3. Take photographs of the damage. 4. Keep a record of all conversations with your insurance company. 5. Make a list of everything you lost or that was destroyed. 6. Find a place to stay while your restoration company cleans up your property. While a house fire is a difficult experience, it helps to have a game plan in place. So remember these steps for the next time you or someone you know is handling the aftermath of a house fire, and call SERVPRO.
Does You and your family have an Emergency Storm Kit?
Mississippi is no stranger to severe storms that cause power outages, flooding, and severe damage. Therefore not having an emergency storm kit that has at least several days of supplies in it, can cause some serious issues whenever the area does have a major storm come through.
To assemble your kit, store items in airtight plastic bags and put your entire disaster supplies kit in one or two easy-to-carry containers such as plastic bins or a duffel bag. Here are a few items to keep in mind while putting together an emergency kit in the event of a severe storm approaching.
Flashlight and extra batteries
First aid kit
Any medicine currently being taken
Emergency food and water
Extra change of clothes and shoes
Pet supplies if you are taking care of an animal
Maintaining Your Kit
After assembling your kit remember to maintain it so it’s ready when needed:
Keep canned food in a cool, dry place.
Store boxed food in tightly closed plastic or metal containers.
Replace expired items as needed.
Re-think your needs every year and update your kit as your family’s needs change.
Kit Storage Locations
Since you do not know where you will be when an emergency occurs, prepare supplies for home, work and cars.
Home: Keep this kit in a designated place and have it ready in case you have to leave your home quickly. Make sure all family members know where the kit is kept.
Work: Be prepared to shelter at work for at least 24 hours. Your work kit should include food, water and other necessities like medicines, as well as comfortable walking shoes, stored in a “grab and go” case.
Car: In case you are stranded, keep a kit of emergency supplies in your car.
These are just a few examples of what an emergency kit should contain. Residents can add whatever else they may need. There should be an emergency kit in every residential building as well as all commercial buildings if possible. Aside from having an emergency kit ready, a plan should also be in place. If there is a designated storm area inside the home or office, occupants should head there with the emergency kits. Severe storms cannot be avoided, but with the right tools and resources they can be easier to deal with.
One of our products SERVPROXIDETM is our proprietary hospital-grade disinfectant registered with the EPA. It is a stabilized chlorine dioxide-based antimicrobial which carries the EPA’s lowest toxicity rating. The product itself doesn’t carry any fragrances other than a mild cleaning odor which dissipates quickly making it a great product for people with chemical or odor sensitivities. There are many different applications for SERVPROXIDETM. It can eliminate odors through disinfecting and oxidation rather than just covering them up. That can be done by applying the product directly with towels or through misting or spraying which is often used when we clean HVAC systems. It has even been utilized in electrostatic spraying for an even application on surfaces inside buildings. In fact, SERVPROXIDETM is the disinfectant we have used when we have been asked to clean and disinfect COVID-19 in homes and businesses here in Wichita. The CDC recommends the usage of a labeled hospital-grade disinfectant with claims against similar types of organisms to COVID-19 and SERVPROXIDE has EPA-approved claims against things like Feline coronavirus, Canine coronavirus, staphylococcus, E.coli, Salmonella, Rotavirus, and Swine flu. When you use SERVPRO, you can have rest at ease knowing that our team is using hospital-grade disinfectant registered with the EPA. Our chemists are even able to advise us in unorthodox situations to utilize our suite of cleaning products to clean and deodorize even the strongest and strangest combination of smells and soils.
According to The American Psychiatric Association "People with hoarding disorder excessively save items that others may view as worthless. They have persistent difficulty getting rid of or parting with possessions, leading to clutter that disrupts their ability to use their living or workspaces. Hoarding is not the same as collecting. Collectors look for specific items, such as model cars or stamps, and may organize or display them. People with hoarding disorder often save random items and store them haphazardly. In most cases, they save items that they feel they may need in the future, are valuable, or have sentimental value. Some may also feel safer surrounded by the things they save. Hoarding disorder occurs in an estimated 2 to 6 percent of the population and often leads to substantial distress and problems functioning. Some research show hoarding disorder is more common in males than females. It is also more common among older adults--three times as many adults 55 to 94 years are affected by hoarding disorder compared to adults 34 to 44 years old.
What is Hoarding?
Hoarded items are often things others would throw away or look at as junk or garbage such as old newspapers, junk mail, or packaging. Hoarding can lead to homes filled with extreme clutter to full capacity from years of accumulation, making living conditions unsanitary and crowded. Bugs, fleas, rats, and other vermin may be present, at which point an exterminator would need to be called. At times, hoarding may spread outside the home as well, to storage facilities, or even the garage or yard.
How can SERVPRO Help?
SERVPRO can encounter hoarding situations in several different ways. We may be called for a fire or water loss and find the hoarding situation when we arrive on-site. We will communicate with the insurance company regarding the customer's contents coverage and after approval, contents can be packed out and possibly cleaned, dried, and stored in our temporary storage in our warehouse so work on the fire or water loss can begin. Another way SERVPRO encounters hoarding jobs is through calls from landlords, caseworkers, real estate agents, or family members. These phone calls normally take place after a death has occurred. In these situations, the crew will see if they should look for any items of importance while they clean the job. Sometimes, family members will come and try to help the hoarder sort through their contents as well. Each case is very different, and hoarding jobs are often sensitive situations, but SERVPRO is here to help make the situation “Like it never even happened.”
A new season is here in NEDL, and it offers an opportunity to refresh your restaurant. Winter months normally mean windows stay shut, and dirt and grime from boots and heavy shoes gets tracked onto the floor. Similar to how people look forward to spring cleaning at home, you can do the same for your restaurant. SERVPRO of NEDL offers plenty of services that can help your business start the season fresh!
Clean Your Air Ducts and HVAC
Your air ducts and HVAC unit work hard throughout the winter to keep your customers and employees warm. The ventilation system should be properly cleaned in the spring to make sure the air quality in your restaurant is not poor. If it has not been serviced for some time, your air could be circulating dust, pollen, odors and dirt and debris. Our technicians and equipment can clean out your system and make sure everyone breathes easier in the new season.
Kitchen Cleaning
Checking the hoods in the kitchen is usually a twice a year job, so what better time to start than for spring cleaning. Cleaning the pilots lights (if it is gas) is also a good idea. Just make sure to follow manufacturer’s instructions. Empty and sanitize the ice machine, and wipe down walls, ceilings and dry storage areas. SERVPRO of NEDL offers great commercial cleaning options as well, so give us a call if there are items you want professionals to fix.
Rugs and Carpets
If your restaurant uses rugs or carpet, springtime is a great time to freshen them as well. If the furniture in your restaurant does not often move, tracks from normal foot traffic can start to wear down your rugs or carpets. When they become matted, these items also hold in an abundance of dust and debris that is carried in on shoes. A proper cleaning will get rid of the smells and the dust!
SERVPRO of NEDL is only a phone call away if you need a professional to help freshen up your restaurant for spring. 662-289-7473

How to Prevent Clogged Gutters from draining water into your home
SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Lands, SERVPRO of Columbus/Starkville want to help you keep your home in the best condition possible - Call us today.
Water Damage is a Possibility with Misaligned Gutters
Watching the rain hit a window as it cascades downward might entertain children, but homeowners should see such activity as a sign of impending problems involving their home. Gutters clogged with leaves, twisted sections, or broken, disconnected areas can cause water to hit your home instead of flowing correctly. Once your gutters receive the required repairs, SERVPRO can mitigate any water damage in your home's living space. When water damages a home because of misdirected rainfall, it can also affect window frames, particularly those made of wood. Interior walls made of drywall can break away in sections or crumble at the slightest touch.
When SERVPRO technicians perform mitigation of water damage, we always check the moisture content of surrounding materials to ensure that they remain undamaged. Materials can seem uncompromised even after water seeped into them. Early detection of this situation means we can get the affected area dried out quickly and prevent any permanent damage. Helping our customers save money is always important to us at SERVPRO.
Water can also occur at the floor level after entering a house. Once there, it can begin warping trim and floorboards. We carry highly effective equipment that handles drying out the moisture inside walls and other structures inside a house. After removing the baseboards and drilling two small holes, we can place the flexible tubing attached to our injectidry system. Once ready, we can begin moving warm, dry air through the wall's cavity and get it dry again. When moisture invades a floor, we can use mats that work similarly. Air movers also work to increase evaporation, and desiccant machines extract water vapor from the air as it circulates. Wherever materials show water damage, we only remove what is necessary and as neatly as possible.
Why Should We Spend Extra Time Extracting from a Water Damage? SERVPRO Knows Why!
Water damage can equal fire in the amount of destruction it can cause. Along with the visible signs of saturation and warping in building materials and contents, there can be mold and foul odors that remain if you do not use a professional service to remove and restore your property.
When SERVPRO of NEDL start to clean, our technicians spend extra time on the water removal step, because the more moisture we remove on the front end means less drying time. Recently when our technicians worked cleaning up a pipe break behind a kitchen cabinet, the water had flowed from the tile flooring to the point where the carpeting began in the living room. The cabinets were backless, and because the homeowner had left them open, there was surprisingly little moisture remaining around the source of the water loss.
Why SERVPRO? Our technicians are certified in a diverse array of restoration sciences and arrive with the right equipment to mitigate any size property loss from water, fire, or other situation. The homeowner had placed towels down between the kitchen floor and the living room in an attempt to stop water but had in fact, exacerbated the issue by making it easy for the water to travel through the towel and into the carpet and padding. Soft probes confirmed the moisture had penetrated less than a foot into the carpeting and weighted extractors were used to push the moisture out of the carpet padding as much as possible.
Once our technicians are satisfied they have removed as much residual moisture as possible, they set-up dehumidifiers and air movers to dry the rooms. The air movers are angled to blow across surfaces where it causes water vapor to rise and in turn, is captured by the dehumidifiers and expelled. Thorough drying of the kitchen and carpeting, followed by hand cleaning and disinfecting took care of the lingering odors left behind by the dampness.

There is nothing quite like erecting a new building to house your business. Ushering in a new era comes with a lot of planning and work. While it can be easy to get wrapped up in the design, it's important to consider what can happen during construction. Items stored in a flooded area or a broken pipe can bring unwanted moisture that may have long-lasting repercussions. Ensuring a water pipe repair is done quickly and other small steps can help ensure a smooth project.
The Main Culprits
If you’ve done your research, you have confidence in the contractor you are using to be on top of preventing damage. It’s still important to stick to the plan and inspect the site frequently to ensure things are being done right. While hopefully the unexpected doesn’t happen, below are ways that water can become a problem.
If pipe connections or drain fittings aren’t properly installed, calling a professional for a water pipe repair may become something you need to do more than you want. A proper test of the system should be done before letting it run on its own. Mother Nature often does not cooperate. If areas are exposed to the elements, it could mean dealing with water damage. This is especially true for elevator shafts, mechanical opening, unsecured doors, and unfinished roofs. While most construction materials are designed to withstand the elements for extended periods of time, others may not be. Regardless of the material, proper storage is key to reducing downtime, losses and ongoing issues.
Dealing with Damage
If water does become a problem, addressing it quickly is vital. A water remediation expert will have the know-how and tools to ensure your new building doesn’t have any lingering problems. From preventing mold to ensure areas are secure from water coming in when it shouldn’t, a professional can help get your construction back on track. Smooth construction is always preferred, but that doesn’t always happen. Staying on top of the things, such as completing a water pipe repair or keeping materials in a dry place, will help keep things worry-free.
Air movers and dehumidifiers help SERVPRO properly restore any water loss.
SERVPRO is the leading fire & water restoration and cleanup crew in the nation. In 2021 we are celebrating our 21st year in business with over 1,700 locations stretching from coast to coast. With that being said we have the entrepreneurial spirit built into our daily operations as each office is an independently owned and operated franchise location.
With so many moving parts of a $2 BN company we take pride in having standardized operating procedures that ensure all SERVPRO customers receive the best service and quality restoration work across the country.
As part of our green system we leverage cutting edge technology that properly measures, moisture maps and scopes all losses to ensure we have the correct amount of equipment placed at each loss to ensure we meet our drying goals.
The drying process consists of two main types of equipment:
Air Movers: air movers are used to vaporize water from surrounding material. This device creates high-velocity airflow for faster drying.
Dehumidifiers: once vaporized, water evaporates or is collected by a dehumidifier. The result is the environment is restored to it's original humidity level.
These two powerful machines help to extract hidden moisture from building materials including drywall, wood, concrete and other organic materials.
SERVPRO is always here to help for your water damage needs, no matter the time of day or day of year! Call us today at 662-289-7473.
When people think about water damage, they think about a major event such a busted hot water heater, water rushing from the bathtub into the lower floors, or an overflowing toilet spilling water all over the bathroom. Unfortunately, hidden leaks can be as costly if they go unnoticed for a long time.
A cracked water line could cause a slow drip behind the fridge that could damage the wall behind it, rot the underfloor and end up ruining the cabinets around it. Unless you notice a puddle of water or start smelling a musty odor around the appliance, it is hard to spot the damage until it is too late.
Take the time to walk around your home and check around the toilets, under the kitchen sink, bathroom sinks, hot water heater, fridge, freezer, washing machine, dishwasher, etc. Regularly inspect the crawlspace, attic, and basement for signs of long-term water damage, leaks, and mold.
If you are dealing with moisture issues, you can call SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Lands 662-289-7473.
How To Protect Your Company's Roof From Sustaining Damage
Buildings that endure the ravages of nature are likely to experience considerable roof damage. As the individual tasked by your company with handling necessary structural repairs, it is in your best interest to implement proper mitigation measures before the next storm hits.
Roofing Destruction Weather Events
Roofing can suffer considerably as a result of:
Tornadoes
Hurricanes
Tropical storms
These natural disturbances are capable of delivering gusts in excess of 74 miles per hour, making wind damage a likely outcome. Diminish the possibility that one of these intense climate situations affects your location by utilizing one of the following methods. Having done so, you will be less likely to need services provided by a commercial storm restoration team.
Roofing Destruction Prevention Techniques You have plenty of options when it comes to stopping roof damage. One way is with metal clips. Using these wall connectors, you can tightly secure your roofing infrastructure. Another possibility is installing a roof deck attachment by fastening plywood rafters directly to your building. A third option is fitting water resistance barriers, protective devices that are inserted both underneath and atop your roof. They are excellent at preventing rainwater from sneaking into unwanted places. Comprehensive roof coverings may be eyesores, but they are highly effective at discouraging harmful winds from wreaking havoc. As a last resort, move to a structure that features sloping geometry. In comparison to flat roof designs, these shapes offer greater protection against extreme elements by allowing better drainage. For an additional precaution, you can also supplement these defensive roofing approaches with storm glass and reinforced shutters. Both of these do a good job of securing windows and doors from tree branches and other blowing debris. Never suffer more roof damage than is unavoidable. Reduce the possibility that your building will need an entire roof replacement after a storm by making use of these suggested safeguards.
With rain gardens, you can provide a place for the water to pool.
How To Protect Properties From Heavy Rainfall
When heavy storms hit, outside flooding can cause damage to your landscape and your building. If your property is not properly protected, storm waters can find their way inside and cause damage to basements, crawlspaces, or other areas. Fortunately, there are several common techniques that are used to protect properties from heavy rainfall.
1. Planting a Rain Garden With rain gardens, you can provide a place for the water to pool, which slows the rain drainage and reduces the amount of water going where you do not want it to go. To create a low maintenance rain garden, use native plants and place plants with the highest wet-soil tolerance toward the middle of the garden.
2. Applying Heavy Mulch Mulch made of pine or other lightweight materials can easily be swept away by a heavy rain storm. By using heavier hardwood or man-made mulches, you can keep chips from being swept away or clogging drains.
3. Using a Swale A swale, which is a depression in a landscape, is used to redirect water drainage. You can slow the water's path by placing rocks in the bottom or putting plants with deep roots along the sides. To slow or prevent outside flooding, direct the water coming out of the swale into rocks, a rain garden, or gardens that contain plants with deep roots.
4. Installing Downspouts Make sure that as the water rolls off your building, it is directed far away from your foundation or other areas you are concerned about. A downspout diverter is used to release the water into a location where it follows a natural downward path away from your property. Outside flooding can cause a lot of damage when the water has nowhere to go. Luckily, once the proper safeguards are put in place, your risk of damage becomes much lower. If you have already sustained water damage , a professional water remediation company can help get your business back to its pre-flood condition
The Importance of Cleaning Items Properly After Water Damage
You can feel almost as victimized by an onslaught of water in your home as you would a masked intruder. The dangers are both immediate and potentially long-term when you are dealing with a broken pipe, backed up sewer or other water damage situation. The specific dangers involved depend on the type of water damage you are facing:
• Clean water • Gray or black water
The process and dangers for pipe burst cleanup, which usually involves clean water, are different than what you’d need a sewer cleanup company to do.
Clean Water Cleanup
The main focus when dealing with clean water cleanup is getting the water out as quickly as possible. This means addressing the flooring, but also wet walls, furniture and belongings. It takes just 24 hours for mold to begin growing on drywall, carpeting, upholstery and other material. Mold can be damaging and a hazard, so it is important to look at each item and restore it properly. Hidden damp areas invite mold and insects as easily as areas you can see.
Another problem with delaying pipe burst cleanup is elevated humidity levels in your home. You could end up with mold far from the broken pipe. The humidity will also make the HVAC system run harder, which can be costly.
Black Water Cleanup
Dealing with black water is infinitely worse. Not only do you have the same potential dangers as you would with clean water cleanup, but you also face contaminants and microorganisms that could prove deadly. These contaminants will remain present until everything is thoroughly cleaned and dried. It is important to note that not all materials can be cleaned satisfactorily and should be disposed of. A trained and qualified sewer cleanup company can be your best bet for restoring what can be and advising you what should be thrown away.
If you are dealing with a broken pipe and need pipe burst cleanup or sewer cleanup company services, the most important thing is to get started right away. Time is not on your side, and delaying can result in more serious problems that may affect your home.
According to the American Burn Association, children are the most susceptible to burn injuries. 73% of all burn injuries happen in the home. At some point in time, children are going to be curious about fire, but it can be dangerous and costly.
When water damage occurs, do you know what to do and what not to do?
Water damage can happen at any point for anyone, home or business, resulting in damaged property. These do's are only for clean water and do not’s pertain to sewage water. Sewage water is treated differently since it causes different damage and requires a different cleanup process. With the right tools and pieces of equipment, our professionals can safely dry out your home or business and the contents within it. Here are some things to always keep in mind.
To minimize the damage, make sure to shut off the source of water and turn off the electricity. It is essential to remove as much excess water as possible by mopping and soaking up with towels. This is especially important for wood furniture.
To ensure that more damage isn't sustained by the furniture make sure to try and move it, if safe to do so.
Make sure to NOT enter a room with standing water since there could be a risk of electrical shock
Make sure to disconnect all power first.
It is recommended to NOT leave rugs and furniture upholstery wet against one another because the fabrics have the potential to bleed between each other.
It is important to note that you should not be utilizing your household vacuum to try and suck up any water.
If these tips are followed, then damage can be minimized and you will be better prepared for help to arrive. Remember to stay safe and get excess water cleaned up professionally to minimize the chance of mold growth. What Mold in Air Ducts Could mean for Commercial Buildings
Mold frequently grows on construction materials for commercial buildings. It thrives in hidden, dark spaces with favorable humidity levels and hosts that provide it the nutrients it needs. Mold spores will settle and develop into colonies in any areas that provide these conditions. Hiring an HVAC cleaning service at least twice a year is recommended for commercial buildings. It is common to find fungus growing inside of HVAC systems on:
AC evaporator coils
The drip pan
Inside air ducts
If you find mold around your commercial property, it is likely there is mold inside of your HVAC system as well. Here's what mold in the HVAC system could mean for your commercial building:
Mold Spores Will Circulate When the HVAC System Turns On
Mold can be found feeding off the dust in your HVAC system. This is because air ducts provide a suitable environment for fungus to thrive. This mold will release mold spores that circulate into every room of a commercial building when the HVAC system turns on. This makes them more likely to attach themselves to the natural construction materials of the building. Regular HVAC cleaning will clear your air conditioning system of dust, preventing mold growth. Cleaning vents frequently will also aid in mold prevention.
Mold in Your Air Ducts Will Cause Unpleasant Smells
A key indicator of mold being circulated through the building is an unpleasant, musky smell. When mold spores are circulated through air vents it makes them more likely to grow on other materials that provide the right nutrients, including water damaged wood or drywall. The smell coming from these materials is often described as humid and earthy.
Mold spores only take about 48-72 hours to develop into colonies. If you have found mold on your property, it is crucial to address it right away by calling an HVAC cleaning service. This will improve the overall air quality in your building and prevent mold damage.
Fires at your home might happen for a number of reasons, and one cause you may overlook is your dryer’s vent. A lint fire can spread quickly and create a large blaze that can cause serious damage throughout your property. You could reduce this risk by learning how and when to clean out your dryer vent and how to practice dryer safety that can keep your home and family safe.
1. Clean the Vent Bi-Annually Cleaning your dryer vent out twice a year, in the spring and in the fall, can clear out lint buildup that can cause a serious fire and help you discover any other problems that may increase the risk. Consider making this task a regular item on your spring or fall cleaning list so you do not forget.
2. Clean Each Part Thoroughly A lint fire can start when the heat from the dryer causes trapped lint to ignite. Lint often builds up in the trap, hose, and vent ducts, so be sure to clean each part with a vacuum cleaner. Start with the lint trap, then unplug the dryer and vacuum all around the house before disconnecting it. Shake out the trapped lint and then clean out the duct. Plug the machine back in and then vacuum up any remaining debris that could cause a dryer fire.
3. Have Your Dryer Area Inspected Calling in a fire damage and restoration service to ensure your dryer space is properly protected may reduce the chance of a fire. Whether your laundry room is inside your home or in a semi-detached space, restoration technicians can help you understand whether the space is safe and how you might prevent future fires, such as cleaning the dryer’s lint trap after each use and disposing of lint away from the dryer. You can prevent a lint fire at your home with proper dryer maintenance and cleaning. You can teach your family these tips as well so they can help you keep your home safe from sudden fires.
When your property incurs water damage, acting quickly is important
When you discover water damage, you can count on SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Lands six-step restoration process to truly restore your property to its pre-damage condition.
6 Steps to Water Damage Restoration
Initial Emergency Contact
You can call us 24 hours a day to begin the water restoration process because taking immediate action is crucial after water damage occurs. When you call us, we will ask you questions to get an overview of the damage and to help us determine what resources to dispatch to you.
Inspection and Damage Assessment
When we arrive on the scene in response to water damage, we will do a detailed property inspection to assess the scope of the damage and to develop a thorough plan of action. We will identify the water source, the category of water, and check for safety concerns.
Moisture Extraction
The water extraction process will remove the majority of moisture via our vacuum and pump units. We will start this process as quickly as possible to lessen the likelihood of more damage occurring and to reduce drying time. We can also help you move out of your belongings in the event that they might be damaged as well.
Dehumidifying and Drying
After the excess water has been removed, we can begin fully drying all porous materials that have absorbed water. Our industrial-grade equipment moves air quickly and helps moisture to evaporate as fast as possible, which will dry out floors, walls, and carpets as well as discourage mold growth.
Cleaning and Repair
After sustaining water damage, impacted surfaces will typically require professional cleaning. In addition to structural cleaning, we will clean your belongings that are able to be restored. We will also do odor removal to prevent the musty odor that water-damaged objects often develop.
Restoration
The final step is ensuring that your property is restored to its pre-water condition. This will involve things like drywall and flooring repairs or even reconstruction. By working with us, you are working with a company that can handle all elements of the restoration, including the difficult reconstruction parts that truly restores things back to their pre-damaged state.
Think about the last time your appliances were moved or inspected
Many of us don’t think about the household appliances that we use every single day. For most, they probably become a passing thought about how much wear and tear they are receiving. Most of the appliances we use to make our everyday lives easier to utilize water. This means they are prone to leaks at some point if they are not caught early on. Water damage can sit for ages before you as a homeowner realize. This is why regular inspections are important for prevention.
Inspect These Appliances for Leaks Often
Hot Water Heater
The lifetime of a hot water heater will typically span 10 to 15 years, but leaks can start much earlier than this. The seals and pipes connected to the hot water heater can often break down, so keeping an eye out for any accumulation both during and after use is a smart move.
Refrigerator
The rarity with which refrigerators are moved can lead to secret water damage that festers for ages before it is brought to light. A refrigerator’s water lines are typically made from a soft plastic that can easily fail, so checking for leaks behind and under the fridge as part of your annual home maintenance is wise.
Dishwasher
A dishwasher’s tubing is just as problematic as a refrigerator, but is even more isolated and utilizes far more water. Additionally, homeowner’s insurance often does not cover water damage caused by older models of dishwashers, so regular checks are extremely important to keep up with.
Washing Machine
Washing machine hoses are some of the most common sources of leaks. Because they are notorious for this, it is recommended that they are inspected at least once a month by homeowners so you can be sure no issues have arisen. In addition to these regular checks, they should be fully replaced every five years in order to prevent hidden deterioration.
Air Conditioner
The drain in your HVAC unit is designed to keep condensation from pooling in and around the unit, but if this drain malfunctions, water damage can quickly be caused. Reference your manufacturer’s manual to determine how often your unit should be inspected and serviced—having a professional technician evaluate your machine is the best defense against HVAC-created water damage.

While fire remediation companies are available to help you rebuild your home, the preferable option is likely to avoid a fire. While wishful thinking will not always prevent a disaster from happening, when it comes to kitchen fires, you can follow four tips to limit the possibility of a grease fire.
Stay alert
Remain present
Use a timer
Remove flammable items
Stay Alert
Kitchen fires and damage often occur because someone lets their guard down while cooking. It is easy to become distracted, especially when dealing with complicated recipes that involve long periods of cooking. However, it is vital that you stay alert. Therefore, if you are drowsy or have had a few drinks, then it might be a good idea to hold off making that fancy meal.
Remain Present
When it comes to kitchen fire prevention tips, the best one is to remain present. You can take this literally. Do not leave the kitchen when you have things frying on the stove. If you must leave, then find someone willing and able to watch the meal for you while you are away. Kitchen fires can happen in an instant, and they require quick responses to limit potential damage.
Use a Timer
If no one is home and you absolutely must leave the kitchen, then set a timer. It is easy to become distracted with other chores. A timer will bring your attention back to the kitchen, where it ultimately belongs.
Remove Flammable Items
Before cooking anything on the stovetop, make sure that you remove any potentially flammable items. For example, move cloth oven mitts and any boxed or plastic objects. You need the workspace to be clear of any fire risks. The four tips above will help to reduce your risks of a kitchen fire. However, keep in mind that fire is dangerous, and if something your cooking does ignite and you can't extinguish it, get to safety and call 911.

If a community is not prepared for a severe storm, the results can be devastating. Since the Central MS Area is no stranger to severe storms, SERVPRO of NEDL wants to share some of the following tips to keep in mind while putting together an emergency kit in the event of a severe storm approaching. FEMA has stated that emergency kits should include some of the following:
Flashlight and extra batteries
First aid kit
Any medicine currently being taken
Emergency food and water
Extra change of clothes and shoes
Pet supplies if you are taking care of an animal
These are just a few examples of what an emergency kit should contain. Residents can add whatever else they may need. There should be an emergency kit in every residential building as well as all commercial buildings if possible. Aside from having an emergency kit ready, a plan should also be in place. If there is a designated storm area inside the home or office, occupants should head there with the emergency kits. Severe storms cannot be avoided, but with the right tools and resources they can be easier to deal with.
We all remember those days when fire drills happened in school! Most of us loved them because it was a time to get a small 20-minute break from our classes, unless you had to stand out in the blazing heat or freezing cold, right?! Well did you know that fire drills are not just for schools, they should be practiced by businesses and even with your families in case of an emergency happening! There is nothing better than being prepared ahead of an emergency. It is crucial to the safety of all that everyone knows more than one way to exit your building or home. Important things to cover are a designated meeting spot (a safe distance from the structure where a headcount can be taken to inform first responders of anyone left in the building), and what to do should you not be able to have an escape route. Here at SERVPRO of NEDL, we suggest that you regularly perform a “fire drill” so that the plan is understood and walked through. That your peers or family members know what to do and how to keep themselves and others safe. If disaster should strike your home or business, know that SERVPRO of NEDL is ready 24/7, 365. Call us at 662.289.7473 to help walk with you through the cleanup and repairs if an emergency happens in your home or commercial business.

Many times the toilet in your home can be the last thing you think about causing water damage. As they age, however, the components that allow it to function properly can jam or malfunction, causing several potential problems. While some of these might be a drawn-out refilling process that can affect your monthly water bill, more severe consequences might include overflowing of the reservoir when the float mechanism does not engage.
Overflowing reservoirs might not affect your home but it does often require professional water removal and recovery. Even with noticing the problem shortly after it begins, an instance like this can quickly cover the bathroom floor and affect cabinetry and the vanity as well. Our SERVPRO® professionals can understand the importance of reacting quickly to this situation.
The tile or laminate flooring likely installed in your bathroom can resist penetration from the pooling water, but saturation can still occur with these materials if the problem does not get addressed quickly enough. While each plank or tile itself works to resist absorbing the moisture, seams and grout joints are more penetrable. To protect your flooring from extensive damage, extraction must begin shortly after the situation gets discovered.
Our SERVPRO® professionals can arrive with high-powered extraction equipment for severe damages like our gas-powered units. For smaller pools, we can also bring in our portable sump pumps and extraction wands. Once the excess has gotten removed from the flooring, we can set up our advanced drying equipment to protect and preserve exposed cabinetry, fixtures, and flooring. We can double check our drying efforts with our thermal imagery cameras to detect lingering moisture pockets that require added attention.
As traumatic as an overflowing reservoir might seem, the right professional assistance can make this water damage “Like it never even happened.”
When flooding affects your home our technicians may perform a technique called a "flood cut".
This specific technique requires cutting out sections of drywall about a foot above the flood line to inspect the wall behind it. While this process is not always necessary, there are a few circumstances that may require it after a flood occurs.
1. Black Water Floods
When outdoor flooding invades your home from overflowing streams or rivers, it may contain sewage, chemicals or dead animal carcasses. This water can be considered contaminated and is known as black water. A flood cut is usually necessary when this type of flooding occurs because your home’s drywall and any insulation behind it may be affected by the dirty water and may need replacing.
2. Wet Insulation
Flood technicians may perform a flood cut and tear out sections of drywall if they believe any insulation behind your home’s walls has water damage. Because insulation cannot be properly dried, a flood cut may be needed to remove any wet material. Once the interior wall is cleaned and dried, new insulation can be installed.
3. Mold Growth
After flooding, mold can begin to grow behind interior walls and spread quickly if it is not addressed. Flood technicians may perform a flood cut to check for mold and treat the area if any is found. Because mold does not need sunlight to grow, it can spread from interior walls to other areas and cause an unpleasant odor in your home. A flood cut can prevent this and keep mold at bay.
Here in Kosciusko, MS its a tradition to enjoy the cooler nights outside around a homemade fire pit! Many of us are looking forward to spending time gathering around them to enjoy time with family and friends. Before you start dreaming of moonlit nights and toasted marshmallows, take a moment to check out some of these tips from Allstate to remember.
Backyard Fire Pit Safety Tips:
Whether you prefer a built-in or portable fire pit, choose one that is not too large for the area. The pit should be a minimum of 10 feet away from any structures or combustible materials as well as away from trees, fences, sheds, power lines, and telephone wires.
Make sure that the seating area is large enough and properly placed for comfort and ventilation.
Check wind direction before lighting a fire.
Don’t use flammable fluids (gasoline, lighter fluid, etc.) to light or relight fires.
To start the fire, use a lighter to ignite crumpled pieces of paper covered with small sticks. Then, add larger sticks and a log or two to keep it burning.
Burn only dry material. Damp material will create excess smoke.
Don’t wear flammable clothing (like nylon) or any loose-fitting clothing.
Never leave the fire unattended, and keep pets and children far away from the fire as they will be attracted to it.
Keep a fire extinguisher, garden hose, or bucket of water nearby.
As the fire dies down, use a shovel and spread out the ashes to allow them to cool down. Then slowly pour water over those ashes and watch them closely to be sure that no burning embers remain or reignite. Put the cooled ashes in a specially designated ash storage metal can.
Multiple SERVPRO team members working I hallway at the middle school.
On average, 24000 electrical fires occur in the U.S. per year, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. Electrical issues caused this certain fire at a middle school here in Kosciusko. SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Lands and SERVPRO of Columbus/Starkville were happy to be of assistance!
Thankfully this fire happened after hours so no children or staff were present. Damage was severe in some areas, but only soot and odor in other areas. The entire school was cleaned and School was able to resume in January.
SERVPRO Tip: Remember especially this time of year space heaters are a top cause of electrical fires. Heaters are often left on in front of/on combustible surfaces like curtains and rugs. Coil heaters are the most dangerous.
Did you know that the water either coming into your home or from your home due to busted pipes or leaks has what we call a “category”? When it comes to handling mitigation in your home it is better to allow the professionals at SERVPRO of NEDL to deal with the emergency because you have to treat the water correctly to be safe. You never know what is either in your water or what the water has passed through to create contamination.
The information below explains the main types of water damage and could help you identify the problem quickly if it ever happens to you.
Category One: Clear Water
This water is the cleanest, most non-toxic form of water damage. It is potable water, perhaps directly from the tap. It is unlikely to cause you any harm, even if you are exposed for some time. Nevertheless, even clean flooding can lead to electrical and structural faults, so it is safer for you to call in the experts for repairs. Clean water comes from things like a broken water supply line, tub or sinks overflow with no contaminants, appliance malfunctions involving water-supply lines to name a few. However, once clean water leaves the exit point, it might not remain clean after contacting other surfaces or materials. Although it is considered the "safest" of the categories, it can degrade to category 2 or 3 if left untreated.
Category Two: Gray Water
Gray water damage is a little bit more serious and requires a speedier removal process. This is because it may contain potentially unsafe levels of chemicals, microorganisms, or dirt. Examples of Cat 2 water include, but are not limited to: overflow from dishwashers or washing machines; overflows from toilet bowls with urine; seepage due to hydrostatic pressure and broken aquariums. If left untreated, it can quickly degrade into category 3.
Category Three: Black Water
Cat 3 water is grossly contaminated and can contain pathogenic, toxigenic or other harmful agents. Cat 3 water can include, but are not limited to: sewage; toilet backflows from beyond the trap; flooding from seawater, rivers or streams, ground surface water, or other contaminated water entering the indoor environment.
The team at SERVPRO of NEDL is skilled in the safe handling of the different categories through training and protective clothing to eliminate the risk of sickness.

SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Lands celebrated with Gary Kern for 20 years of service. Gary is one of our Crew Chiefs and started with SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Lands only 2 years after the company began. Gary started as a technician and has worked his way into a lead crew chief. We want to thank Gary for his many years of service to our company and our clients.
The service we provide our clients shows in employees like Gary and the experience they bring to the table. We have numerous employees with well over 10 years experience in the fire and water mitigation field and hope they all get to celebrate just like Gary with 20 years. With over twenty years experience in this industry SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Lands is here to help you.
We received a call from a local school they had damage from a fire the night before. The source was unknown but the fire department had came out and the scene was cleared for our arrival.
Our crews got there and extracted a significant amount of water. They removed base cove, ceiling tile and affected drywall.
We then started the multi-week cleaning process to remove the smoke and soot from the affected areas in the building. Multiple day of fogging were a necessary process in order to remove odors that may have remained.
This fire affected the entire facility of over 40,000 sf. Time was of the essence and the facility was able to be opened in January for school to begin its 2nd semester.
This year we've seen colder than normal temps in our area and while we might enjoy a break from the heat, you always want to be prepared for those days of extreme cold temperatures. Did you know that your place of business can become damaged due to winter weather and extreme cold, your personal health & the health of your customers are also at risk. Based on a report done by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), they estimated that in recent years, U.S. death rates in winter months have been 8 to 12 percent higher than in non-winter months. Much of this increase relates to seasonal changes in behavior and the human body, as well as increased exposure to respiratory diseases. Cold temperatures can also worsen pre-existing medical conditions such as cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. For example, death rates from heart attacks increase as temperatures drop, likely due to the way cold affects blood circulation, blood vessels, and other factors With information like this, you must be aware of what could happen in your business should water damage or fire damage cut off your heat source. The two main conditions to be aware of are frostbite and hypothermia. Frostbite is caused when your skin is exposed to extremely cold temperatures. Physical symptoms are white or grayish-yellow skin, skin that feels unusually firm, or waxy numbness. Hypothermia is when your body temperature falls to an abnormally low temperature, caused by long exposure to cold weather. Signs of hypothermia include shivering, exhaustion, confusion, fumbling hands, memory loss, slurred speech, and drowsiness. If someone’s body temperature is below 95°F, seek medical attention immediately. We understand that a loss of heat from an emergency can affect your business. If you experience an emergency, know our team is ready to help you get your business back up and running.
Flight information at an airport showing cancelled flights because of storms
Storms can cause a variety of issues. It can leave businesses in need of storm damage repair, and it can interfere with people's flight plans. Dealing with a canceled flight is something no one wants to deal with. It isn't uncommon for flights to be delayed or canceled due to a snow storm, thunderstorm, or even high winds. It's inconvenient, but there are several things you can do to help get to your desired location sooner rather than later. If you are stuck for a while, there are some storm tips that can at least make your wait a little more comfortable.
Looking for Alternatives
There may be an alternative that can help you get where you need to be sooner.
You can call the airline to see if there is anything they can do.
You should also speak with the gate attendant to see if there is a flight they can get you on.
You can do your own research as well.
These options may help you find a seat on another flight so you can get to your destination sooner. Consider looking for a connecting flight, even if you were originally on a flight that gets you straight from A to B.
Ask to Be Put Up in a Hotel
If you are stuck in the city due to a canceled flight, with no hope for a same day switch, you can ask the airline if they are willing to put you up in a hotel. This can at least make you a little more comfortable before you decide what your best option is. They may or may not accommodate you, but it's something to consider. They may be willing to provide you with food vouchers or a discount.
It can be really frustrating to deal with a canceled flight, and sometimes, there is nothing you can do. See if there are alternatives that can get you to your destination sooner, by either making a few phone calls or checking with the airline attendants. If all else fails, make yourself comfortable for a while until you can figure out an alternative to get home.

After a flood, many homeowners and property managers wonder if their carpet and pad can be saved. The answer is, it depends. Factors such as the age and quality of the carpet and pad, as well as the type of installation used, have to be taken into consideration. However, the type of floodwater that caused the damage is most important when determining whether or not carpet and padding can be salvaged.
There are 3 floodwater categories that determine whether the carpet and padding can be restored to their pre-disaster condition:
Category 1 (clean water): non-contaminated water that may come from a broken pipe, sink, etc. After the water has been extracted, carpets and pads can be dried and restored in place.
Category 2 (gray water): dirty water that has been released by sump pumps, washing machines, dishwashers, etc. The carpet can usually be restored if it has been wet for less than 48 hours. The pad is replaced in most cases.
Category 3 (black water): water containing dangerous contaminants that may originate from sewage and toilet backflows as well as from floods caused by natural disasters. To protect your family’s health, carpets and pads should be removed, discarded and replaced.
Since every water damage situation is different, you cannot know for sure if or when your carpet and pad can be salvaged until you have a professional restoration company inspect the situation.
The faster you report the disaster, the lower the costs will be. If you’re dealing with a flooding problem, contact SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Lands today to speak to a Mitigation Specialist at 662-289-7473.
Floods are one of the most common and widespread natural disasters in the United States.
There is always potential for flood damage no matter where you live. According to the American Red Cross floods cause more damage in the United States every year than any other weather related disaster. The American Red Cross offers these flood safety tips:
-Stay away from floodwaters. If you come up on a flowing stream where water is above your ankles, stop, turn around and go another way. Six inches of swiftly moving water can sweep you off of your feet.
-If you approach a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are riding rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.
-Keep children out of the water. They are curious and often lack judgment about running water or contaminated water.
If a flood occurs and affects you, call SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Lands. Even minor floods have potential to cause major damage. We are faster to ANY size disaster. Let us help you get your life back in order.

We all know the noises our home makes. That cracking when it is quiet, the sound of someone walking around in the attic or the quiet drip of the shower even hours after it has been used. Our homes all have a set of familiar noises! However, not all those sounds can be good for your home or your wallet! Especially, the sounds coming from your water pipes may be a warning. While a whistling faucet may simply require a new washer to quiet down, if you have a hissing, whistling sound in multiple fixtures and a hammering noise coming from your pipes, you could be headed for a pipe break! Residential water pressure is usually around 80 psi, but sometimes municipalities have to increase pressure for nearby non-residential facilities. When this happens in the your area the increased water pressure can damage your home’s plumbing. In addition to the irritation of noisy pipes, high water pressure can:
Erode pipes
Reduce life expectancy of fixtures
Increase water bills
Result in leaks
Cause a pipe burst
What’s Causing the Noises?
As a large amount of water is forced through fixture openings designed to handle a lower flow, it makes a whistling sound, just like forcing a large amount of air through pursed lips causes a whistling sound. When water suddenly stops flowing through pipes, the momentum causes it to slam around inside the pipe, which causes a clanging or banging sound. Your plumbing has built-in air chambers to prevent this from happening, but when water pressure is higher than normal, the chambers aren’t enough to prevent the hammering sound. The longer you wait to address high water pressure in your home, the more likely it is to cause a pipe break.
What To Do About High Pressure
If you suspect your water pressure is too high, call a plumber in your area to test the pressure for you. A device called a pressure regulating valve, or PRV can be installed to control the water pressure inside your home. Hiring a professional to prevent a pipe break is far preferable to hiring one to fix a broken pipe inside your walls. SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Lands wants you to catch an emergency before they occur but if one happens before you can stop it, know that we are ready to help you at a moment’s notice. Know the Facts about Business Fires
According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, as many as one in four businesses that suffer some kind of major disaster do not reopen afterward. It’s true, overcoming a major loss is extremely difficult, but with the right restoration company and team on your side, working hand-in-hand with your insurance company, the chance of your Central MS-area company surviving is pretty high!
Depending on the size of the fire, and the amount of damage, some businesses that have come to SERVPRO for help have reopened just days after the fire happened. Thanks to innovations in smoke odor removal, fire damage restoration, and cleaning in general, it is possible for crews to start work nearly immediately after the fire department clears the scene, and have things back up and running in no time. Although, again, that all depends on the severity of the fire. But no matter the severity, recovery is possible!
According to the National Fire Prevention Association, U.S. fire departments responded to about 3,300 office property fires per year between 2007 and 2011. Those fires resulted in about $112 million in property damage each year, and most were in business offices – and happened during business hours. However, the good news is the number of business fires was down a whopping 71 percent from 1980 to 2011.
Here are some other stats from the NFPA:
Time of Day
Peak time of day for office fires: Noon – 2p.m. (a.k.a. lunch time!)
69% happened between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
The 31% that occurred between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. caused 67% of recorded property damage, because they went undetected longer. This also highlights the need for automatic detection equipment and working sprinkler systems.
19% of fires happened on weekends.
Cause of the Business Fires
29% were caused by cooking equipment. However, just 6% of these fires caused actual property damage.
Intentionally-set fires caused the most direct property damage – 21%.
Electrical equipment is the second leading cause of office fires.
Just 2% of office fires start in a concealed space like an attic, in the ceiling, or in another conceals space. However, these fires accounted for 13% of the direct property damage.
Containment & Putting it Out
4 out of 5 fires were confined to the room of origin.
90% of fires were large enough to activate sprinklers, which were effective 88% of the time.
Deaths per 1,000 stores were 62% lower in offices equipped with sprinklers compared to those without.
Industrial/Manufacturing Facility Fires
The NFPA also has statistics specific to manufacturing facilities. According to their research, there are about 37,000 fires at industrial or manufacturing facilities each year, resulting in 18 deaths, 279 injuries, and $1 billion in property damage. Heating equipment and stop tools were the leading cause – sparking 28 percent of the fires. Mechanical failure or malfunction caused 24 percent of the fires.
The Best Way to Reduce a Business Interruption Following a Disaster to Your Business is to Plan Ahead for One
As many as 50% of businesses never recover following a disaster, according to the latest industry research. -A no cost assessment of your facility which means there is no need to allocate funds, giving you a great value at no cost.
-A concise profile document that contains only the critical information needed in the event of an emergency. It will only take a little time to complete and will not take you away from current projects. But it will save a lot of time if ever needed.
-A guide to help you get back into your building following a disaster. This can help minimize the amount of time your business is inactive by having an immediate plan of action.
-Establishes SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Lands as your disaster mitigation and restoration provider. You have a provider that is recognized as an industry leader and close by, when needed.

Odors from smoke, pets, decomposition or mold can cause lingering odors in your home or business. A simple surface clean doesn’t necessarily get rid of these smells. With technicians certified by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration (IICRC), SERVPRO provides specialized services that can rid your home or business of offensive odors left by smoke, mold or other sources. Our professionals do not cover up lingering odors with a fragrance; they seek out and remove the sources of the odor. Once the source is found, we use SERVPRO’s own proprietary line of cleaning products to treat and prevent the odor from returning. Any restorable item in affected areas will also be professionally cleaned and deodorized, including furniture, draperies and upholstery, electronics, art, flooring, walls, ceilings, HVAC air ducts, and more. Along with our proprietary line of cleaning products SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Lands uses various techniques and equipment to treat odors. These techniques are capable of penetrating surfaces to neutralize an unpleasant odor thoroughly. Some of the tools we use include: Ozone Generator: The Ozone Generator is one of the quickest ways to eliminate odors from a home or office. We use the Ozone Generator to oxidize odor and eliminate odors from mold, mildew, pets, nicotine, smoke and more without the use of chemicals. Though the room being treated cannot be occupied while in use, the generator works quickly to clean, sanitize and remove offensive odors. Hydroxyl Generator: The Hydroxyl Generator has several benefits that the Ozone Generator does not. The main benefit is that the room being treated can be occupied during the deodorization process; though it does work slower. The Hydroxyl Generator can be used to treat fire and smoke, as well as biohazard jobs, water damage, crime scene situations, and animal odors. Air Filtration Device: This piece of equipment, also known as an air scrubber, is used to remove airborne contaminants during water, fire, smoke, mold, and sewage restoration work. These work by pulling air through HEPA filtration to remove airborne particles from the air. This helps clean the air and remove odors. Whether you are a building manager who needs an apartment cleaned for the next tenant or homeowner who wants to get your home ready for sale, getting rid of offensive odors is a high priority. Fire, water, or mold damage, or just a stubborn odor that refuses to go away, SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Lands is here to help make it “Like it never even happened.” Call us, at (662) 289-7473

Smoke and Soot Damage can cause a long-lasting odor in your home
Smoke and soot can cause hidden damage and odor. Our Production Techs are experts when it comes to smoke damage who can accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a plan of action. Facts about Smoke and Soot
Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.
Different Types of Smoke Did you know there are actually different types of smoke? There is what is called wet smoke and dry smoke! Check out the two types below in more detail. Wet Smoke // Plastic and Rubber
Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke // Paper and Wood
Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises, therefore, smoke rises.
Protein Fire Residue // Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
At any given moment, a fire emergency can take place in the North Houston area or abroad, and though unexpected; it can be beneficial to already have a plan in place for everyone in your home to evacuate and meet in a safe location. While you should always be most focused on keeping yourself and your family safe, you can also spend some time on pet preparation so that you can have a better chance of getting your pets out of danger as well. You can be better prepared to keep your pets safe during a fire emergency by following these safety tips:
Practice Evacuating
In the confusion caused by a fire, it can be hard to think of everything you need to do right away. If you have a plan in place and practice it a few times, you can be better prepared to handle a fire emergency. This can not only be helpful for pet safety, but also for the safety of everyone in your household.
Notice Where Your Pets Are
An important part of the planning process can be noticing where your pets usually spend their time. It can be especially helpful to note where they hide when frightened. You don’t want to put yourself at risk by spending too much time searching for your dog or cat during a fire emergency, but you can be better prepared to get yourself and your pets out as soon as possible by having a checklist of areas you can look.
Keep Collars and Leashes Handy
Fires can be especially frightening to pets. By keeping their collars and leashes handy, you can more easily guide them out of the house. If you are unable to find them, it can be easier for the fire department to get them out if they are wearing collars. It can be a good idea to hang leashes by the door you are planning to evacuate through. Call us at 662.289.7473.
Whether there is heavy rain, freezing temperatures, damaging winds, or sleet and snow; all of these can cause property damage. You can't control Mother Nature but you can be prepared so here are some tips to help you:
-Check for tree limbs and branches that might have fallen.
-Roofs, pipes and gutters should all be inspected and make sure they are in proper working order. Clear gutters from debris, a damming effect could cause roof damage or interior water problems. Downspouts should be facing away from the home or building.
-Clean your chimneys and exhaust systems from debris.
-Test your gas lines for leaks.
-Inspect your property for proper drainage.
-Protect pipes from freezing by allowing water to drip when temperatures dip below freezing. If any pipes are under cabinets leave the cabinets open. Make sure exterior pipes are properly insulated.
-If there are any outdoor faucets, you might want to shut the water off.
-Make sure all exterior doors and windows have sufficient weather stripping.
Lately there has been flooding all over the United States: if you are unfamiliar with the difference between a flash flood warning, flood warning, and flood advisory; then read below!
What is the difference between a Flood Watch and a Flood Warning issued by the National Weather Service?
Flash Flood Warning: Take Action! A Flash Flood Warning is issued when a flash flood is imminent or occurring. If you are in a flood prone area move immediately to high ground. A flash flood is a sudden violent flood that can take from minutes to hours to develop. It is even possible to experience a flash flood in areas not immediately receiving rain.
Flood Warning: Take Action! A Flood Warning is issued when the hazardous weather event is imminent or already happening. A Flood Warning is issued when flooding is imminent or occurring.
Flood Watch: Be Prepared:A Flood Watch is issued when conditions are favorable for a specific hazardous weather event to occur. A Flood Watch is issued when conditions are favorable for flooding. It does not mean flooding will occur, but it is possible.
Flood Advisory: Be Aware: An Flood Advisory is issued when a specific weather event that is forecast to occur may become a nuisance. A Flood Advisory is issued when flooding is not expected to be bad enough to issue a warning. However, it may cause significant inconvenience, and if caution is not exercised, it could lead to situations that may threaten life and/or property.
According to the IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification) there are a couple of reasons to choose a professional over doing it your self. Below are a few reasons:
The process of fire and water restoration is very involved when it is performed properly.
With quick reaction time and the appropriate skill set, a technician can help to prevent further damage and repair that which has already been done
The process and equipment used during fire and water restoration will vary from case to case, since different materials require their own unique care.
For fire damage, general cleaning is done to remove ash and soot from ceiling to floor.
The quick remediation of the problem is important for more than repairs, it is also a health consideration
Choose a company for fire and water restoration with the appropriate licenses and proof that they have the proper insurance.
Whether the work to be done is in a commercial or residential location, technicians with experience and certification should perform the damage recovery.
Always be prepared. SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Lands is her to help
Ensuring your home has at least one working fire extinguisher is one of the first steps toward fire preparedness. However, these important tools can come in a variety of styles. Here are a few tips for choosing the right extinguisher for your home.
1. Consider the Chemical Rating
Many extinguishers include an A, B or C rating to help you know which home fire type it is rated for. The A rating is used for dry combustible materials such as paper or wood, while the B rating indicates effectiveness against flammable liquids. Both of these ratings should have a number after the letter. These numbers indicate the effectiveness level with higher numbers being more effective than lower. The C rating indicates that the extinguisher materials are non-conductive, and may be used in the event of an electrical fire. There is no numeral indicator for C ratings.
2. Look at the Valve Type
There are two types of valves your fire extinguisher may come with. A plastic valve indicates the extinguisher is disposable and will need to be replaced after time or after being used. A metal valve is used for refilling the tank when the pressure gets low over an extended period of time, or after use. Most extinguishers include a gauge to help you determine when a refill may be necessary.
3. Keep the Size in Mind
Extinguishers can come in a variety of sizes. The size you choose may depend on the location it is intended for. Large extinguishers should be kept in areas where a fire may grow quickly, while small to medium extinguishers are best for quick grab situations. In all cases you should know how to properly use your fire extinguisher and follow proper fire safety protocols.
Whatever type of fire extinguisher you choose, remember to read the instructions for its use. It’s also important to keep your extinguisher in working order by checking the pressure and age readings, and having your extinguisher refilled or replaced when needed.

Fall decorations, like dried flowers, leaves and cornstalks, are highly flammable. Keep these and other decorations away from open flames and heat sources, including light bulbs and heaters. Since these items are dry, they can ignite very easily and spread flames quickly.
Have A Plan
Be sure you have a Fire Preparedness Plan and your family knows what to do if a fire breaks out in your home. Keep emergency exits clear of decorations so nothing blocks escape routes.
Protect your family by teaching your children to stay away from open flames. Be sure they know how to stop, drop, and roll if their clothing catches fire.
Ensure your smoke alarms are in working order and that you have an easily accessible fire extinguisher.
Make Halloween Safe
Remember safety first when choosing a Halloween costume. Consider avoiding billowing fabrics. If you are making your costume, choose material that won’t easily ignite if it comes into contact with heat or a flame.
It is safest to use a flashlight or battery-operated candle in a jack-o-lantern. Use extreme caution if using a real candle. Place lit pumpkins away from anything that can burn, and out of the way of doorsteps, walkways, and yards.
Be Careful in the Kitchen
With the holidays quickly approaching, your kitchen may be working on overdrive. While cooking, it can be easy to get distracted, especially if you have children. However, kitchens are a high-risk area for household fires, so it’s important to remain watchful.
Never leave food unattended while cooking, especially working with oil. Hot grease can splash and ignite. Keep flammable objects, like washcloths, potholders, and paper towels, away from the stovetop.
If a fire starts in your oven, keep the door closed. Turn it off and wait for the fire to extinguish.
Safely Use Your Fireplace
As the weather turns cold and brisk, fireplaces can bring a warm and inviting atmosphere to any home. However, if fireplaces are not properly cared for, they can lead to an increased fire and smoke risk. Make sure your fireplace is clean and well maintained and never left unattended when lit.
When there is a water spill, it is essential to clean the affected area thoroughly, a process which involves various steps. Clean is a relative state, so the steps involved depend on the level of cleanliness that you need to achieve. The three levels of cleanliness are sterile, disinfected and sanitary. For a residential property reaching sanitary condition is usually sufficient because it eliminates any health risks. We have IICRC certified technicians that can clean your property after water loss to achieve the sanitary level of cleanliness.
Removing any water left standing after the spill is a crucial step during water cleanup. If the water originates from a dirty source such as a faulty appliance, it might contain wastes that might soil, or even stain the contents in the house, if left unaddressed for long. Our SERVPRO technicians handle this by extracting the water within the shortest time possible. We have different types of equipment to match the type of extraction needed. We can use submersible pumps if the pool is over two feet deep or truck-mounted water extractors for lower levels.
After removing the standing water, various soils and debris might be left necessitating various cleaning actions including the use of chemical agents and mechanical processes such as agitating the surfaces. Our SERVPRO technicians use pressure washers or brushes where mechanical action is needed. We also have various professional cleaning agents to remove dyes and other stain-causing materials. We evaluate the material involved to ensure we use the right agent. For instance, we do not use chlorine bleach on wool and silk or when removing stains from rust.
Bad smells are likely to develop after a water spill incident. The causes vary depending on the specifics of the incident. If the water spilled contains debris, such debris might reach concealed spaces causing the bad smells. Even clean water might dissolve or push ordinary debris such as pet wastes into hidden crevices resulting in smells that do not go away even after cleaning is done. Our SERVPRO technicians combat this by deodorizing the affected property. If there is a carpet, we treat both sides with an EPA-registered disinfectant then use a fogger to apply a deodorizing agent. On hard surfaces, we use mop application
How Professional Equipment helps to make water cleanup easier
Water cleanup demands the use of appropriate products and equipment to make the job easier and things cleaner. Since we are talking about specialized equipment, it is the role of the technicians to operate the equipment correctly. There are also specific directions that we follow when applying the cleaning products when attending to such situation. All incidents are not the same, so, we select the equipment to use depending on the situation we are facing.
To determine if the structure is dry or not during water cleanup in your home, we use detection devices. In this step, we use moisture sensors, moisture meters, and thermo-hygrometers. Thermo-hygrometers help us to measure the temperature and the relative humidity of the site. The role of moisture sensors is to determine whether there is moisture in materials during the initial stages of the inspection. On the other hand, moisture meters are helpful when we need to determine the exact moisture content in materials.
When our SERVPRO technicians are drying your property using dehumidifiers and air movers, moisture escapes from wet materials and surfaces into the air. As the air absorbs the moisture, it reaches a saturation point where it cannot absorb any additional water vapor. If condensation takes place, then some additional damage is likely to occur. We perform dehumidification to remove the water vapor from the air using dehumidifiers and in the process speed up drying.
We also have appropriate tools to disengage the pad and carpet, separate seams and reinstall the carpet, seams, and pad. The use of safety equipment is equally important since it helps our SERVPRO technicians to avoid injury. For instance, we use gloves, boots, eye protection, and overalls. Our work usually follows the state and local regulations.

Across the United States though, flooding is one of the most commonly widespread weather-related disasters. Whether your home or business is near a coastline, along city streets, in the mountains, near a river or even in the desert, there is always potential for flood damage Though you may have never experienced a flood in the past, there’s no level of security to assure that you will not in the future. Did you know that 20% of all claims paid by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) were for policies in low-risk communities. According to the American Red Cross (ARC), floods cause more damage in the U.S. every year than any other weather-related disaster. The ARC offers the following safety tips:
Stay away from floodwaters
If you approach a flowing stream where water is above your ankles, stop, turn around, and go another way. Six inches of swiftly moving water can sweep you off of your feet.
Driving on a flooded road
turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and water are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.
Keep children out of the water
They are curious and often lack judgment about running water or contaminated water.
Always be prepared and ready. Even minor floods have the potential to cause major damage to a structure when not treated quickly and properly, and the cleanup is often an overwhelming task. SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Lands is prepared to handle any size disaster. The sooner work begins; the sooner your home or business can return “Like it never even happened.”
Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:
Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas. Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation
When there is water in your home, mold can quickly become an issue. It can cause health issues and damage to your property. SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Lands has the training, protective gear, and specialized equipment to handle your mold problem.

Assessment Your property will be carefully inspected for signs of mold using various technologies to detect mold and hidden water sources. Mold feeds on cellulose and water and can be hidden from plain view.
Containment Different containment procedures will be placed to prevent the spread of mold, like negative air chambers to isolate the contaminated area with physical barriers and negative air pressure to keep the mold spores from spreading during the cleanup process.
Air Filtration Specialized filtration equipment captures microscopic mold spores out of the air. SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Lands technicians use powerful air scrubbers and HEPA vacuums to prevent the spread of these mold spores while the mold remediation is in progress.
Removing The process of mold remediation depends on the amount of mold growth and the type of surface it's on. Anti-fungal and antimicrobial treatments will be used to eliminate mold colonies and help prevent new ones from forming. Removing and disposing of mold-infested porous materials, like drywall and flooring, may be necessary.

Thermohygrometers measure temperature and relative humidity. When armed with this information, SERVPRO® of Northeast Delta Lands can calculate and create an environment most conducive to drying. When facing a contaminated water loss, it is not only important to dry the structure, but the structure must also be disinfected and often deodorized.
Ultra Low-Volume (ULV) Foggers will atomize liquid deodorizing agents, producing a fine mist that can easily penetrate the site where odor-causing residues may accumulate. This device can also be used to inject fungicides and disinfectants into wall cavities and other hard-to-reach areas.
Thermal Foggers dispense solvent based products by creating a dense fog. The fog consists of tiny particles of deodorant solution that attach to and neutralize odor causing particles to deodorize structures, garments, automobiles and other places where cleaning cannot reach.
The bottom line? SERVPRO® of Northeast Delta Lands has the training and equipment to make it “Like it never even happened.”

Indoor air can get polluted with dust, allergens, and other small particles. If you are concerned about your indoor air quality, you might benefit from having your air ducts cleaned. Having your air ducts professionally cleaned may make a difference in the overall quality of your indoor air. And, cleaning your air ducts may also help your HVAC system function more efficiently.
When it comes to air duct cleaning, homeowners often have many questions. Here are a few of the most common:
Does a professional air duct cleaning really make a difference? A professional air duct cleaning can benefit you in more than one way. First, the cleaning will remove dust, debris and other pollutants from your air duct system. This can be beneficial to anyone living in the home who suffers from allergies, has breathing problems, or is sensitive to pollutants. Second, clean air ducts can result in a more efficient HVAC system. When your home’s ventilation system is clean, it can function more efficiently – which may ultimately save you money on your monthly energy bill.
How often should I have my air ducts cleaned? Unless you are in the midst of a home renovation project or you live in an area with extremely high pollution, you should not need to clean your air ducts more than once a year. In fact, after your air ducts are professionally cleaned, you may not need another thorough cleaning for several years. For advice on how often you should have your air ducts cleaned, make sure to ask your air conditioner repair company. If the air conditioner company does not offer air duct cleaning services, they should be able to provide you with the name of a reputable company to call.
Can I clean the air ducts in my home myself? Many homeowners wonder if they can clean their home’s air ducts with their own vacuum cleaner. In reality, it is practically impossible to clean an air duct system with a regular vacuum. Air duct cleaning companies use special equipment that is designed to specifically clean air ducts. As a homeowner, one of the best things you can do to prevent pollutants from infiltrating your air ducts is regularly change your HVAC system’s air filters.
Is a professional air duct cleaning expensive? The cost of air duct cleaning services varies. Factors that are taken into consideration when an air duct cleaning company provides you with a quote include the number of air ducts in your home, the age of your home, the length of time since the air ducts were last cleaned, the current condition of the air ducts, and more.
The benefits of servicing your HVAC unit include:
Helps to restore peak energy efficiency.
May help to eliminate offensive odors.
Helps reduce the potential for mold growth.
For more information on HVAC and air duct cleaning, call SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Lands today at 662-289-7473.
You may not learn about the mold problem in your building until you hear complaints about the irritating musty odor. Some people think that the smell actually comes from tiny particles of mold in the air or from mold spores. Neither are true. Odors from molds are caused by mycotoxins, which are gases released during the digestive process of some molds.
Molds are fungi, just like mushrooms. Some scientists think the mycotoxin production from certain types of molds is actually an adaptation developed to protect the molds from animals and insects. Nobody is sure how many varieties of mold live on our planet because they are so abundant, living wherever oxygen and moisture are found, especially here in the humid South. Since molds exist abundantly in our environment, it's just about impossible to keep them out. Here are a few ways the spores can enter a building:
• On pets and clothing • Through windows and doors • Via cooling, ventilation, and heating systems
The problem is when mold spores land in a hospitable environment, one with organic material, moisture, and oxygen. That is when the mold begins to grow and form colonies. As it grows, it consumes organic material as food, producing that familiar musty smell.
How Can You Prevent Mold?
The best way to prevent molds is to make sure you are not providing a welcome environment for their growth and development. You can manage your building's environment by reducing humidity with ventilation systems and dehumidifiers, fixing leaky areas from pipes or roofing, and proper remediation of water damage.
When you do follow that musty odor to the source and discover mold in your building, at least you can count on professional mold remediation specialists here at SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Lands to clean up the problem. During the cleaning process, professionals use HEPA air filtration equipment and containment procedures to reduce further spread of mold spores inside your building. This cleanup process will prevent mycotoxin production, making the environment more hospitable to your human building occupants again.
Thunderstorms are common here in the South, and can oftentimes become very severe with strong winds, lightning, tornadoes, hail, and flash flooding. It is important to be prepared before these storms happen to protect yourself and your family. You should take a few precautions in order to keep you and your family safe.
Before a Thunderstorm:
Familiarize yourself with the terms that are used to identify a thunderstorm hazard, including understanding the difference between a severe thunderstorm watch and a severe thunderstorm warning. A severe thunderstorm watch means there is the potential for severe thunderstorms (damaging winds/large hail) to impact your area within the next 6 hours. A severe thunderstorm warning means a severe thunderstorm is occurring or will likely occur soon. If you are advised to take shelter, do so immediately. Note, a severe thunderstorm refers to a thunderstorm producing winds of 58 mph or greater, 1-inch (quarter) sized hail or larger, and/or a tornado. Although lightning can be deadly, severe thunderstorm watches and warnings are not issued specifically for lightning.
Remove dead or rotting trees and branches that could fall and cause injury or damage during a thunderstorm.
Know your lightning safety rules. For example, if you hear thunder or see lightning, go indoors. Stay indoors for at least 30 minutes after hearing the last clap of thunder.
If thunderstorms are expected in your area, postpone outdoor activities.
Secure outdoor objects that could blow away or cause damage.
Shutter windows and secure outside doors. If shutters are not available, close window blinds, shades, or curtains.
During a Thunderstorm:
If there is a thunderstorm in the area, go quickly inside a home, building, or hard top automobile, if possible.
If shelter is not available, go to the lowest area nearby.
If on open water, get to land and shelter immediately.
Listen to a battery-operated NOAA Weather Radio or radio for the latest updates.
Avoid taking a shower or a bath during a thunderstorm. Plumbing and bathroom fixtures can conduct electricity.
Do not use electrical items such as computers or television sets as power surges from lightning can cause serious damage.
A corded telephone should only be used in an emergency, but cordless phones and cell phones are safe to use.
Things to avoid include:
Tall or isolated trees or other tall objects Hilltops, open fields, the beach, a pool, a boat on the water, isolated sheds or other small structures in open areas. Anything metal — wires, metal fences, tractors, farm equipment, motorcycles, golf carts, golf clubs, and bicycles.
After a Thunderstorm, remember to:
Never drive through a flooded roadway. Turn around, don’t drown!
Stay away from storm-damaged areas to keep from putting yourself at risk from the effects of thunderstorms.
Stay away from downed power lines and report them immediately to your local power company.
If your home or business is damaged by a storm, please contact SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Lands. SERVPRO has equipment available to remove water from your home
When a homeowner experiences a water disaster, the list of tasks necessary to return the property to before loss condition can be long. Prioritizing projects include deciding to hire professional help for some of the jobs. Water removal requires specialized equipment, the operation of which is best managed by certified and seasoned technicians. Partner with our veteran water extraction crews for fast and efficient results.
When a pipe breaks or an appliance malfunctions, water removal is job one in your dwelling. Vast quantities of water can fill the room where the accident occurred over even a brief period, and migrate to other areas of your house. Ridding your property of the water relies on access to a fleet of powerful high-efficiency water pumps and extractors, rarely owned by or available to the average homeowner. Each of our service vehicles contains submersible pumps and wanded wet vacuums ready for use immediately after our production managers assess your emergency. We can start the removal process even if your power is temporarily unavailable.
Because excess water by its nature moves throughout your home after a plumbing or appliance fail, effective removal compels a thorough inspection for hidden caches of moisture. The SERVPRO water removal crews we dispatch are familiar with precision moisture measurement tools and advanced scanning technologies that locate water wherever it collected. Finding all the moisture stemming from the accident is crucial as water left to soak into structures and personal possessions leads to secondary damage such as mold growth and permanent ruin to the building materials and contents involved.
Although in theory you may feel up to the challenge of removing water on your own, the fact is our trained and experienced crews have the advantage of the speed of many hands and the confidence built on repetition and training. After only 24 to 48 hours, lingering moisture can support a burgeoning microbial outbreak. Materials like drywall crumble and hardwood swell and buckle. SERVPRO involvement provides you with the appropriate scaled response to ensure the water exits your home before irreparable damage occurs.
SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Lands prepares our water removal crews for speedy and professional outcomes when responding to your emergency. Call us at (662) 289-7473 to schedule an assessment and institution of a comprehensive water removal plan. We answer 24/7, every day of the year.
Fixture Wear Can Lead To Water Damage In Your Home
Properties Often Suffer Water Problems from Failed Plumbing
While there are countless ways that water can negatively impact your home, few people tend to think of something as simple as a broken fixture. Something as fundamental as a broken faucet or connection to the plumbing underneath a sink or leading to a shower could result in damages. These kinds of problems that are out of their line of sight are out of mind until a problem appears.
By the time that these fixtures fail in your home, any number of water damages could result. Even a fast reaction time on your part to cut the water supply could still impact all of the rooms adjacent to the walls housing the plumbing. Even if you are not aware of where exactly the leak has occurred, you can trust that the experienced professionals at SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Lands, can identify the problem as well as how to restore the damage that it caused.
Our SERVPRO technicians arrive at your home get to work immediately on assessing the full scope of the damage and the equipment that we need to fix the problem you face. Extraction is often a large part of this process, especially in areas where substantial water damage has occurred. While hard flooring surfaces are ideal for using our wet-vacs and portable pumps, sometimes specialized equipment like weighted extractors are necessary for carpeted areas that get impacted by the spread of the water.
Drying the area is a critical step for our SERVPRO technicians. While air movers and dehumidification equipment work to remove the moisture from open areas that got affected, our system moves air through the wall cavity where the plumbing problem has gotten repaired to eliminate any lingering dampness or moisture in these areas. This process also helps to prevent dormant mold spores from developing into significant and damaging colonies.
There are plenty of ways that water and the resulting damage can affect your home, but no matter the reason, having the right team of professionals can make all the difference in how smoothly the restoration goes. Fires at your home or business can be a very difficult and stressful experience. In most cases the fire starts without notice. Each year more than 2,500 people die and 12,600 are injured in home fires in the United States. This number could drop significantly if we would prepare for the worst and hope for the best. A big problem that we see, is that the average person has the attitude that it will never happen to them. Which is the worst attitude to have when it comes to any form of disaster. Here at SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Lands we urge the people in our community to prep homes and businesses for any types of unannounced disasters, especially fires. They come on quickly, with hardly any warning and can destroy everything if not properly put out by your local fire department. Here at SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Lands we strive to make it "Like it never even happened."
You've just suffered a fire and you decide you want to save a few bucks on the restoration process and handle the cleanup yourself. Smoke and soot are a reminder of the disastrous fire that took its toll on your home. Left over smoke and soot following a fire can be unsightly and foul smelling. Fire damage can linger for years unless properly addressed and restored correctly. Adequate safety equipment is essential in reducing possible dangers to smoke and soot exposure and other health related issues resulting from the firefighting efforts. Proper ventilation is also necessary to protect and restore indoor air quality following a fire. HEPA filtration can absorb toxic air flow in the house and is used to preserve air quality as well. If you have any concerns or questions, we urge you to contact your local SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Lands, where the experts and professionals can assist you with any type of destruction, including smoke and fire damage. It’s a pledge that SERVPRO makes to its community.
Homeowners that detect mold in their dwellings can seek help from a qualified remediation professional. It can be confusing as to which removal method is best for their homes. Let SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Lands worry about that. Remediation efforts differ when it comes to the affected surfaces. Mold found on porous materials, such as dry wall, carpet and insulation, must be remediated through the complete removal of these materials. These porous materials must be properly disposed of in order to ensure complete mold spore removal. However, nonporous or semi porous materials, such as concrete or hardwoods, can remain in the home to be properly sanitized depending on their level of damage. The professionals at SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Lands are trained to handle mold remediation and are always willing to check the mold situation before remediation begins.
Let SERVPRO start your Emergency Ready Profile for your business today.
According to the US Small Business Administration, as many as one in four businesses that suffer some kind of major disaster do not reopen afterward. It's true, overcoming a major loss is extremely difficult, but with the right restoration company and team on your side, working hand-in-hand with your insurance company, the chance of your company surviving is pretty high!
Depending on the size of the fire, and the amount of damage, some businesses that have come to SERVPRO for help have reopened just days after the fire happened. Thanks to innovations in the smoke odor removal, fire damage restoration and cleaning in general, it is possible for crews to start work nearly immediately after the fire department clears the scene, and have things back up and running in no time. Although, again, that all depends on the severity of the fire. But no matter the severity, recovery is possible!

Water damage can be deceptive. Water penetrates into structural cavities creating trapped pockets of saturation. the detection of water in these areas can often only be discovered with sophisticated moisture detection meters. Undetected moisture will continue to cause damage. this damage, at a minimum will cause odors. Greater damage will surface when materials delaminate, shrink, split and further deteriorate to where costly repairs are required.
More than just removing excess water, IICRC-certified restorers have the knowledge and equipment to further dry a home or facility (including substructure materials) completely back to preloss conditions. Through response and the careful monitoring of water damage, mold and other health issues can be prevented. If water damage has been present too long, mold will occur.
All IICRC-certified professionals have the training and experience to identify moisture sources, evaluate mold growth (visible or suspected), contain damage, remove contamination and dry materials to ensure that mold will not return.
We had to opportunity to partner with a local State Farm insurance agency and take time out to say a big thank you to the First Responders in Philadelphia Mississippi. We had a cookout where we had hamburgers, sausage dogs and all the trimmings. We could not have planned a better day for the event, mid 70’s temperature and not a cloud in the sky. It was good to see all the local responders coming out and enjoy the food, sunshine and great conversation. We had a great turn out and there was representation from the Philadelphia Police Department, Neshoba County Sheriff's Department, Choctaw Police Department, we had several city and Volunteer firemen along with several Emergency Medical Technicians drop in for the event. While we can truly never repay them for what they do on a day to day basis, we do want again to say Thank You for all you do for the community.
When a flood hits your home, there is not much time to collect yourself, let alone start to mitigate damages. However, if you can manage to get things in motion quickly, you may be able to reduce expenses and repair times associated with flood damage to your residence. When a flood hits, try your best to follow these points of advice to minimize property damage and headache in the ensuing days and weeks.
Get Things Higher Up Before the Storm - You may want to spend some time in the hours before it hits moving your belongings to higher ground. Floods don't often reach higher than a few feet in the home, and you should be able to keep most of your belongings safe by taking them to higher floors or placing them on counter-tops and secure tables. Be careful not to place too much trust in a feeble table, however, as it may buckle or overturn as sweeping floodwaters overtake it.

Understanding the basics of mold damage to your home can help you prepare better if you spot some early signed of the damage.
Unfortunately mold spores are everywhere and eliminating them entirely isn't possible. However, it is possible to prevent conditions that promote their germination and growth. One of the most important factors promoting growth is moisture. Eliminating moisture from your house is your best defense.

Air Duct Cleaning, HVAC Cleaning | SERVPRO Industries, Inc.
Ventilation systems are often the biggest culprit in poor indoor air quality. Make it a priority to inspect the ductwork of your business.
If your HVAC has been operating for some time without attention, it could be circulating odors, dust and other contaminates.
SERVPRO Franchise Professionals routinely inspect the heating, ventilation and air conditioning unit (HVAC). Keeping them clean can extend the life of the equipment. This can in turn save you money and give you cleaner air to breathe.
However, duct cleaning is not always necessary. SERVPRO Franchise Professionals will make recommendations about the best way to address any indoor air quality concerns. This can save you money and provide peace of mind on the health of your system.
TORNADOESTornadoes can strike without warning and destroy a community in seconds. Before a tornado warning is issued for your area, here are some things you should do:
1. Know your community’s warning system.
2. Pick a place where family members can gather if a tornado is headed your way. It could be your basement or, if there is no basement, a center hallway, bathroom, or closet on the lowest floor. Keep this place uncluttered.
3. If you are in a high-rise building and don’t have enough time to go to the lowest floor, pick a place in a hallway in the center of the building.
4. Remove diseased and damaged limbs from trees.
5. Move or secure lawn furniture, trash cans, hanging plants or anything else that can be picked up by the wind and become a projectile.
THUNDERSTORM SAFETY STEPS Thunderstorms injure an average of 300 people every year, and cause about 80 fatalities. Here are the top thunderstorm safety steps you should follow:
1. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to the storm to be struck by lightning. Go to safe shelter immediately.
2. As the storm approaches, take shelter in a building.
3. If you are driving, pull off the roadway and park. Stay in the car with the windows closed and turn on the emergency flashers. Avoid touching metal or other surfaces that conduct electricity in and outside of the vehicle.
4. If you are inside, unplug appliances and avoid using the telephone or any electrical appliances. Avoid taking a bath or shower, or running water for any other purpose.
5. If you are caught outside and cannot reach a safe building, avoid high ground, water, tall, isolated trees and metal objects such as fences or bleachers. Picnic shelters, dugouts and sheds are not safe.
FLOODING Heavy rains could fill rivers and streams, bringing flooding to the area. If your neighborhood is threatened with the possibility of flooding, here are some things you should do:
1. Be prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice. When a flood or flash flood warning is issued for your area, head for higher ground and stay there.
2. Stay away from floodwaters.
3. If you come upon a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.
4. Keep children out of the water.
5. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize flood danger.
DOWNLOAD EMERGENCY People should download the free Red Cross Emergency App to receive emergency alerts and information about what to do in case of tornadoes, flooding and other disasters, as well as locations of shelters. The App also includes emergency first aid information and a Family Safe feature which allows people to instantly see if loved ones are okay. The free Emergency App is available in app stores by searching for the American Red Cross or going to redcross.org/apps.
SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Lands had the opportunity to participate in the 31st annual iDay at Mississippi State University hosted by the Risk Management and Insurance Program at MSU. They had 2 days of continuing education classes which were great. They also offered a tour of the Newly renovated Dudy Noble Baseball field so we could be some of the first to see some of its new amenities followed by a barbecue dinner at the Bryan building. They also hosted a Golf Tournament on the beautiful Old Waverly course in West Point which is always first class. The event drew insurance professionals from all over the southeast, almost six hundred from over fifteen states. They featured several key note speakers from across the industry covering everything from health care to distracted driving and everything in between. They also featured two local speakers that drew a good crowd, Neil Price, voice of the bulldogs and Joe Moorhead, Mississippi State's new Head Football coach. The best speaker personally to me was Kevin Elko, spoke about how to achieve greatness in work and life. He was a great speaker and I'll leave you with one of his quotes, "all great people do one thing, they finish what they start."
Each year, the Red Cross responds to nearly 64,000 disasters, the vast majority of which are home fires. So we set a goal to reduce fire-related deaths and injuries in the US by 25%.
On average:
7 people die every day from a home fire, most impacting children and the elderly
36 people suffer injuries as a result of home fires every day
Over $7 billion in property damage occurs every year
Every day, seven people die in home fires, most in homes that lack working smoke alarms. Sadly, children and the elderly disproportionately lose their lives. The American Red Cross wants to improve the odds and save lives- that’s why we launched our Home Fire Campaign in 2014.
A critical part of the campaign is Sound the Alarm, a series of home fire safety and smoke alarm installation events across the country. Together with fire departments and other community partners, Red Cross volunteers:
Canvass at-risk neighborhoods
Install free smoke alarms
Replace batteries in existing alarms
Provide fire prevention and safety education
In just three years, our home visits have accomplished so much, including the installation of more than 1 million smoke alarms and preparing more than 1 million people against home fires.
Join us April 28 through May 13 on a Sound the Alarm home visit in your community, where teams of volunteers will be installing 100,000 free smoke alarms in more than 100 cities across the U.S. Together, we can save lives!
The month of January brought in two weather fronts that brought us some of the coldest weather for longer than we had seen in while. The first one was early in the month, just after the first of the year and the second came close to the middle of the month. We all try to prepare for the below freezing temps but the timing in which these came caught a lot of people were still out of town. A lot of the homes we worked in that were severely affected were unoccupied over the holidays. Water ran from frozen lines in some homes for up to 5 days in some cases, maybe more some homes the owners were unsure exactly when the burst occurred. As a home owner, if you know these weather conditions are coming and you have already left town, always have a plan, leave a key for someone so they can periodically check in or even hire a house sitter. This one simple move could save you thousands.
If I had to sum up my first storm experience in two words, the words that come to mind first are fast and furious. That is exactly how I would describe it. With this being my first year with SERVPRO and my first storm experience, I’ll admit, it was a little overwhelming at first. It is easy to get overwhelmed in a situation where you are getting so many jobs in such a small window. If it would not have been for my training and for the advice handed down to me by those who had been through it before, I would have been in way over my head. Personally, I believe, without a doubt, that a person learns best when that person does not have a choice but to learn. The training videos do help, but videos can not prepare you for the speedy, nonstop process of a storm. You learn to organize and plan better, because you simply do not have a choice. My first storm experience hit me unexpectedly and was full speed ahead, and for that, I am grateful, because it made me understand how important teamwork actually is. I look forward to learning and growing in areas where we, as a company, can improve to better prepare ourself for the next storm.
If mold is growing in your home, you need to clean up the mold and fix the moisture problem. Mold growth can be removed from hard surfaces with commercial products, soap and water, or a bleach solution of no more than 1 cup of household laundry bleach in 1 gallon of water.
Mold growth, which often looks like spots, can be many different colors, and can smell musty. If you can see or smell mold, a health risk may be present. You do not need to know the type of mold growing in your home, and CDC does not recommend or perform routine sampling for molds. No matter what type of mold is present, you should remove it. Since the effect of mold on people can vary greatly, either because of the amount or type of mold, you can not rely on sampling and culturing to know your health risk. Also, good sampling for mold can be expensive, and standards for judging what is and what is not an acceptable quantity of mold have not been set. The best practice is to remove the mold and work to prevent future growth.
If you choose to use bleach to clean up mold:
Never mix bleach with ammonia or other household cleaners. Mixing bleach with ammonia or other cleaning products will produce dangerous, toxic fumes.
Open windows and doors to provide fresh air.
Wear non-porous gloves and protective eye wear.
If the area to be cleaned is more than 10 square feet, consult the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guide titled Mold Remediation in Schools and Commercial Buildings. Although focused on schools and commercial buildings, this document also applies to other building types.
Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using bleach or any other cleaning product.
In any company, it’s always funny when the “new guy” messes up or makes a mistake. This was just the case my second week of work in my new position as Marketing and Sales Representative for SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Lands. I was sitting at my desk, not expecting to be asked to do anything honestly. The phone rings, and I get asked to take the van to Starkville for the Christmas parade. I’ve never driven one of these vans before so I am already nervous. As I am pulling out of the parking lot and onto the highway, I hear a loud BANG and immediately start to panic thinking that I have hit an oncoming vehicle. I look out of my side mirror and see that the sliding door on the van has come open and air-movers are falling out left and right. Just a big, green SERVPRO van dragging air-movers down the highway. I pull to the side of the road, out of traffic and run back to start picking up air-movers. As I pick up the first one, our office manager, Tonya is walking up to help, of course she thinks it is hilarious while I am in the middle of a panic attack. We got them all picked up and loaded back onto the truck and closed the sliding door once again, except this time, I triple-checked to make sure the door was closed. This is a great example of how quick SERVPRO can get to any disaster, no matter what kind it may be. Those air-movers were out of that highway and back onto the truck in a flash, "Like it never even happened."
SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Lands brings football to our local Veterans Home. Tents, football players, cheerleaders and band are all onsite to help the Hero's of our country celebrate. On October 13, 2017 we had our 3rd annual VA Tailgating. This year we incorporated some extra help from some other local businesses and hope to build on this next year.
The people of the United States have a tradition that those who served our country in the armed forces, especially in time of war, shall receive consideration and care when they are in need. The Mississippi Veterans Affairs Board is extending this special kind of care through a partnership with the VA.
We salute these efforts and hope our event helps, even if in a small way, to honor and support our Veterans.
When smoke and flames consume a residence, trying to pick up the pieces and return to a normal life may seem impossible. Fire damage restoration is an important first step in the process of rebuilding the structure and making it a livable space once again. The process of remediation after this kind of loss is time-sensitive and involves a number of steps. Finding a professional organization to perform this process can lessen stress, on the body and mind as well as financially, and help property owners return to the home that they love. A professional fire damage restoration team follows a number of steps in achieving the goal of returning the affected property to its former state. Proper cleaning of the structure itself, proper cleaning of your contents as well as properly cleaning your air conditioning unit will ensure that your home will be smoke free and you can get back to normal.
We are very fortunate to have as many small towns as we do in our area. These towns bring a level of community that most places do not understand or or appreciate. This Christmas season we have had the pleasure of being a part of 4 different Christmas Parades. These were located in Starkville, Carthage, Philadelphia and Kosciusko. Our staff came together with some great ideas about decorating vehicles. As small as this seems to some, the impact of being a part of the community has great impact for business. Most individuals would like to see local business succeed. Being involved in these community events lets our potential clients know we are a part of the community. This is something we are proud to say we are a part of, and will continue to strive toward.
This is the season to get together with the ones you love and celebrate the Season. Most of us have different traditions that every year we hold strong to. But lets take a moment to think about this, we spend a majority of our time with the people we work with. I know I see my co-workers much more than I do my son. Which brings me to the point of this, our co-workers should be looked at as extended family to a degree. We should respect each other and be thankful for what we have been given. We had our annual Christmas Party and the entire evening was enjoyable. From the youngest member to the oldest, its great to have our SERVPRO Family.
Holiday Hazards: Fire, Lights, and Christmas Trees
It's that time of year again. And while we are wasting no time ensuring that our homes are filled with joy and holiday spirit, all that optimism can make it easy for us to forget about the potential dangers that come along with the festivities.
Holiday Hazards: Fire, Lights, and Christmas Trees
Here are some safety tips that you can follow to prevent or reduce the risk of fire hazards this holiday season.
Candles
Place all candles in non-tip candle holders
Keep all lit candles away from the curtains, the Christmas tree, and out of the reach of children and pets
Never leave lit candles unattended, and be sure to snuff each of them out before going to bed
Fireplaces
Always use a secure screen to contain sparks and embers
I hear this a lot from consumers...I got the water mopped up, I think it have it under control. Well this is what IICRC has to say "Water damage can be deceptive. The 2017 Boo Fest, Games, activities, candy in downtown Kosciusko. Activities, games, booths along Madison Street on the square, courtesy of our local businesses and community organizations. SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Lands participated. We got very creative this year and made our candy bowl out of an air mover it turned out great. The Office Manager dressed as one of our Hometown Heroes and gave away over 2000 pieces of candy. The smiles on the faces of the children were what really makes this event a success for our community. Kosciusko put a wrap on October Tuesday evening with the annual safety parade on the downtown square. This event is always a safe way for the children of our community to have a safe and fun Halloween.
There are several things you as a home owner you can do to prevent water damage from happening to you. Here are a few examples of some simple things you can do to reduce your risk.
** Be careful where you plant
Some plants and trees, like weeping willows and elm trees, have pretty invasive roots. If you’re not careful, they’ll grow right into your sprinkler system, drainage field, pipes, and septic tanks. Plan before you plant to keep roots away from any water lines.
** Keep an eye on your water bill
With the majority of your water pipes hidden behind walls and in the floors in your house, you might not know there’s a leak until the damage is done. That’s why it’s a good idea to keep a close eye on your monthly water bill. If you see it starting to creep up, or get one that’s uncommonly high, it’s a pretty good sign that you may have a leak somewhere
** Upgrade supply line hoses
Old, brittle or leaky hoses are among the most frequent causes of water loss for home owners. Checking or replacing the supply lines on your sink, toilets and appliances can potentially save you a lot of time, money and headache. Replace yours every five years or so and you might avoid a mess and very expensive damage to your home.
** Never pour grease down your sink
You’ve probably heard this before, but you should definitely avoid pouring grease down your kitchen sink. It doesn’t matter if you flush it with hot or cold water. It can still congeal and cling to your pipes, and could still cause some serious damage and blockage.
Some people use detergent to break up grease before pouring it down the drain…and that may help sometimes. But there’s no guarantee that it’ll keep the grease from sticking to your pipes, so why take the risk?
The safest thing to do is just to pour your grease in an empty can, and either let it sit or put it in the refrigerator. Once it hardens you can toss it in the trash and get rid of it.
I recently had the opportunity to travel to a flood zone and work for and meet some great people. This area had flood waters higher than they had experienced in years. There were families that were land locked and could not leave, some houses were underwater completely. There were others that were affected in different ways such as sewage backups and drainage systems that failed due to such a large volume of water. But even in the midst of all the chaos, business interruptions and displacements, the customers were so nice and welcoming to all of us. The restaurants, hotels, service stations we visited while in the area were thanking us as well for what we were doing in the area helping get others homes back in order. There were other franchises in the area from out of state that I had the chance to speak with and they shared the same sentiment. It’s great to be able to work for a company that can have this kind of positive impact in a community where customer can feel comfortable knowing we have their best interest in mind.
One of the most common questions during a water damage is “what do I need to do until help arrives?” Here a few Do’s and Don’ts when it comes to water damage.
Do’s:
Contact your local restoration company as soon as possible
Remove as much excess water as possible by shop vacuum, mopping or blotting
Wipe excess water from around wood furniture after removal of lamps and table top items
Remove and prop up wet upholstery items such as cushions for even drying
Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpet
In the summer, turn on HVAC unit to maximize drying
Remove colored rugs from wall to wall carpeting areas to minimize staining
Pick up loose items, such as toys and clothes, to allow maximum air to reach the wet areas
Don’ts:
Leave fabrics wet in place, dry them as soon as possible
Hang furs and leather goods to dry separately at room temperature
Leave books, magazines or other colored items on wet floors
Use your household vacuum to remove water
Use TV’s or other household appliances while standing on wet floors
Turn on ceiling fans to help with drying if the ceiling has been wet
Keep out of rooms where ceilings are sagging from retained water
Christmas is always a fun time of year for our staff and communities. SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Lands is ready for the holidays and was more than happy to participate in the Kosciusko Christmas Parade and the Carthage Christmas parade. Our staff worked hard on decorating our new Fire/water wrap truck with a Lighted Christmas tree, lighted wreaths, Santa hats and more. The high top van in Carthage was a big hit with the children and our staff had a great time getting everything ready. We love to show our Christmas Spirit and support our local Chamber of Commerces, Main Streets and Development organizations. Everyone in our SERVPRO family would like to wish everyone in your family a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Land sponsored the Honor Roll Luncheon for Kosciusko High School. All "A" and "B" honor roll students get an afternoon of fun and food for their accomplishments. We had a blast with them and a "BIG" thank you to Big Daddy for grilling.
Running a business can be a challenge, but the best way to make an impact with your business is to first make an impact in the community you serve.
To make your business vital to your town, try these seven ways of getting involved:
1)Serve on a Community Board, 2)Volunteer, 3)Build Partnerships, 4)Donate, 5)Participate in Community Events, 6)Plan and Host Events, 7)Promotions Giveaways and Contests.
Following these seven tips will lead your business in the direction of being valuable and relevant to your community. And when you are able to demonstrates these values publicly (whether it’s offline or online), the benefits are clear.
SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Land participated in the Safety Parade on our Court Square. We were represented with our Hometown Heroes, Stormy and Blaze, who were on hand to help hand out candy, coloring sheets and informative information about fire safety. This event is a wonderful addition to our downtown in the fall of the year. It's a safe environment for our community children to "Trick or Treat", learn from the interactive booths set up and play lots of games. This event is hosted by our local MainsStreet, downtown merchants and the City of Kosciusko. The children had a great time and so did we. Below are safety tips:
Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks.
Look left, right and left again when crossing and keep looking as you cross.
Put electronic devices down and keep heads up and walk, don’t run, across the street.
Teach children to make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them.
Always walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible. Children should walk on direct routes with the fewest street crossings.
Watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Teach children to never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars.
SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Land and Columbus/Starkville gets new management truck. Everyone can start looking for the Fire/Water vehicle coming down the road. You will see the fire coming as you meet it on the road and the water in your rear view mirror. It is the perfect wrap to represent the Fire and Water restoration our company is doing. We are an IICRC certified company and follow all standards set forth as such, with trained staff who care about our clients. Our company is locally owned and operated. We hope disasters don't happen but if they do, we are here to help. When you see the new fire/water vehicle you know help is own the way. You can always count on SERVPRO.
