Indoor Air Quality

3/1/2023 (Permalink)

Discovering the environment of a new job is often a part of the first day. You figure out who to go to for help, how to use the copier, and what time of day is best to visit the break room to guarantee the coffee will be fresh. But another vital part of our work environments that we often neglect to evaluate is the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ). As a business owner or a building manager, this element is a vital part of a thriving business and happy and healthy employees.

The sources of pollutants are sometimes hard to identify and are hard to totally eliminate from a building. They come from multiple sources and some causes, specifically building materials like insulation or paint, continuously emit pollutants. In other circumstances, pollutants that originate in an appliance or building system could be spread at regular intervals or even seasonally when things like air conditioning or the furnace turn on. And still, other pollutants are harder to predict as they are associated with human behavior, such as cleaning or re-decorating.

Thankfully, administrations like OSHA have provided guidelines to give us a baseline for treating and assessing Indoor Air Quality. OSHA suggests considering the following factors when assessing your building’s IAQ: temperature, humidity, ventilation, and the presence of mold and chemicals. Improving these factors can improve the Indoor Air Quality even when the sources of pollutants cannot be totally eliminated.

If you are concerned about the air quality in your workplace, give SERVPRO a call to find out how we can help.

Top Causes of Commercial Fires

2/1/2022 (Permalink)

Fire damage to your commercial business can be catastrophic. It does not matter what your business does, it can mean downtime, loss of goods, costly equipment loss, loss of property, or worse. A fire can quickly move through a building and even put your team at risk. If you are not prepared it can be a situation that escalates faster than you are ready to handle. Good planning can help ensure that a fire does not happen or if it does, how it can be handled quickly and effectively. Below the United States Fire Administration has listed the top five leading causes of a commercial fire.

Top causes of fires in commercial buildings

According to data from the United States Fire Administration, between 2006 and 2015, the top causes of fires in commercial buildings were:

Cooking

Cooking is a huge danger, and it was a culprit behind 30,900 fires within the past decade. This is why it is so important to install fire alarms and a sprinkler system in your kitchen to prevent against the worst!

Unintentional and Careless Behavior

This is a broad category. Unintentional and careless behavior, better known as accidents, caused more than 10,900 fires. While it’s hard to stop people from being careless, business owners and property managers can’t afford to be.

Arson

Intentionally set fires represented 9,800 of the total fires in these properties.

Electrical malfunction

Problems with the electricity or wiring in a building caused around 7,000 fires in the past decade.

Heating problems

Problematic HVAC systems are the culprit behind about 6,000 commercial fires nationwide.

Trust that SERVPRO keeps in mind that time down for your business, is money lost. So our team will work around the clock to make sure it is “Like it never even happened,” and your business is back up and running!

Freshen Up Your Restaurant This Spring

2/1/2022 (Permalink)

A new season is here in NEDL, and it offers an opportunity to refresh your restaurant. Winter months normally mean windows stay shut, and dirt and grime from boots and heavy shoes gets tracked onto the floor. Similar to how people look forward to spring cleaning at home, you can do the same for your restaurant. SERVPRO of NEDL offers plenty of services that can help your business start the season fresh!

Clean Your Air Ducts and HVAC

Your air ducts and HVAC unit work hard throughout the winter to keep your customers and employees warm. The ventilation system should be properly cleaned in the spring to make sure the air quality in your restaurant is not poor. If it has not been serviced for some time, your air could be circulating dust, pollen, odors and dirt and debris. Our technicians and equipment can clean out your system and make sure everyone breathes easier in the new season.

Kitchen Cleaning

Checking the hoods in the kitchen is usually a twice a year job, so what better time to start than for spring cleaning. Cleaning the pilots lights (if it is gas) is also a good idea. Just make sure to follow manufacturer’s instructions. Empty and sanitize the ice machine, and wipe down walls, ceilings and dry storage areas. SERVPRO of NEDL offers great commercial cleaning options as well, so give us a call if there are items you want professionals to fix.

Rugs and Carpets

If your restaurant uses rugs or carpet, springtime is a great time to freshen them as well. If the furniture in your restaurant does not often move, tracks from normal foot traffic can start to wear down your rugs or carpets. When they become matted, these items also hold in an abundance of dust and debris that is carried in on shoes. A proper cleaning will get rid of the smells and the dust!

SERVPRO of NEDL is only a phone call away if you need a professional to help freshen up your restaurant for spring. 662-289-7473

The Importance of Cleaning Items Properly After Water Damage

2/14/2021 (Permalink)

You can feel almost as victimized by an onslaught of water in your home as you would a masked intruder. The dangers are both immediate and potentially long-term when you are dealing with a broken pipe, backed up sewer or other water damage situation. The specific dangers involved depend on the type of water damage you are facing:

• Clean water
• Gray or black water

The process and dangers for pipe burst cleanup, which usually involves clean water, are different than what you’d need a sewer cleanup company to do.

Clean Water Cleanup

The main focus when dealing with clean water cleanup is getting the water out as quickly as possible. This means addressing the flooring, but also wet walls, furniture and belongings. It takes just 24 hours for mold to begin growing on drywall, carpeting, upholstery and other material. Mold can be damaging and a hazard, so it is important to look at each item and restore it properly. Hidden damp areas invite mold and insects as easily as areas you can see.

Another problem with delaying pipe burst cleanup is elevated humidity levels in your home. You could end up with mold far from the broken pipe. The humidity will also make the HVAC system run harder, which can be costly.

Black Water Cleanup

Dealing with black water is infinitely worse. Not only do you have the same potential dangers as you would with clean water cleanup, but you also face contaminants and microorganisms that could prove deadly. These contaminants will remain present until everything is thoroughly cleaned and dried. It is important to note that not all materials can be cleaned satisfactorily and should be disposed of. A trained and qualified sewer cleanup company can be your best bet for restoring what can be and advising you what should be thrown away.

If you are dealing with a broken pipe and need pipe burst cleanup or sewer cleanup company services, the most important thing is to get started right away. Time is not on your side, and delaying can result in more serious problems that may affect your home.

What Mold in Air Ducts Could mean for Commercial Buildings

2/9/2021 (Permalink)

Mold frequently grows on construction materials for commercial buildings. It thrives in hidden, dark spaces with favorable humidity levels and hosts that provide it the nutrients it needs. Mold spores will settle and develop into colonies in any areas that provide these conditions. Hiring an HVAC cleaning service at least twice a year is recommended for commercial buildings. It is common to find fungus growing inside of HVAC systems on:

  • AC evaporator coils
  • The drip pan
  • Inside air ducts

If you find mold around your commercial property, it is likely there is mold inside of your HVAC system as well. Here's what mold in the HVAC system could mean for your commercial building:

Mold Spores Will Circulate When the HVAC System Turns On

Mold can be found feeding off the dust in your HVAC system. This is because air ducts provide a suitable environment for fungus to thrive. This mold will release mold spores that circulate into every room of a commercial building when the HVAC system turns on. This makes them more likely to attach themselves to the natural construction materials of the building. Regular HVAC cleaning will clear your air conditioning system of dust, preventing mold growth. Cleaning vents frequently will also aid in mold prevention.

Mold in Your Air Ducts Will Cause Unpleasant Smells

A key indicator of mold being circulated through the building is an unpleasant, musky smell. When mold spores are circulated through air vents it makes them more likely to grow on other materials that provide the right nutrients, including water damaged wood or drywall. The smell coming from these materials is often described as humid and earthy.

Mold spores only take about 48-72 hours to develop into colonies. If you have found mold on your property, it is crucial to address it right away by calling an HVAC cleaning service. This will improve the overall air quality in your building and prevent mold damage.

We received a call from a local school they had damage from a fire the night before.  The source was unknown but the fire department had came out and the scene was cleared for our arrival.

Our crews got there and extracted a significant amount of water.  They removed base cove, ceiling tile and affected drywall.

We then started the multi-week cleaning process to remove the smoke and soot from the affected areas in the building.  Multiple day of fogging were a necessary process in order to remove odors that may have remained.

This fire affected the entire facility of over 40,000 sf.  Time was of the essence and the facility was able to be opened in January for school to begin its 2nd semester.

How Extreme Cold Can Effect Your Business

1/20/2021 (Permalink)

This year we've seen colder than normal temps in our area and while we might enjoy a break from the heat, you always want to be prepared for those days of extreme cold temperatures. Did you know that your place of business can become damaged due to winter weather and extreme cold, your personal health & the health of your customers are also at risk. Based on a report done by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), they estimated that in recent years, U.S. death rates in winter months have been 8 to 12 percent higher than in non-winter months. Much of this increase relates to seasonal changes in behavior and the human body, as well as increased exposure to respiratory diseases. Cold temperatures can also worsen pre-existing medical conditions such as cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. For example, death rates from heart attacks increase as temperatures drop, likely due to the way cold affects blood circulation, blood vessels, and other factors With information like this, you must be aware of what could happen in your business should water damage or fire damage cut off your heat source. The two main conditions to be aware of are frostbite and hypothermia. Frostbite is caused when your skin is exposed to extremely cold temperatures. Physical symptoms are white or grayish-yellow skin, skin that feels unusually firm, or waxy numbness. Hypothermia is when your body temperature falls to an abnormally low temperature, caused by long exposure to cold weather. Signs of hypothermia include shivering, exhaustion, confusion, fumbling hands, memory loss, slurred speech, and drowsiness. If someone’s body temperature is below 95°F, seek medical attention immediately. We understand that a loss of heat from an emergency can affect your business. If you experience an emergency, know our team is ready to help you get your business back up and running.

Know the Facts about Business Fires

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, as many as one in four businesses that suffer some kind of major disaster do not reopen afterward. It’s true, overcoming a major loss is extremely difficult, but with the right restoration company and team on your side, working hand-in-hand with your insurance company, the chance of your Central MS-area company surviving is pretty high!

Depending on the size of the fire, and the amount of damage, some businesses that have come to SERVPRO for help have reopened just days after the fire happened. Thanks to innovations in smoke odor removal, fire damage restoration, and cleaning in general, it is possible for crews to start work nearly immediately after the fire department clears the scene, and have things back up and running in no time. Although, again, that all depends on the severity of the fire. But no matter the severity, recovery is possible!

According to the National Fire Prevention Association, U.S. fire departments responded to about 3,300 office property fires per year between 2007 and 2011. Those fires resulted in about $112 million in property damage each year, and most were in business offices – and happened during business hours. However, the good news is the number of business fires was down a whopping 71 percent from 1980 to 2011.

Here are some other stats from the NFPA:

Time of Day

  • Peak time of day for office fires: Noon – 2p.m. (a.k.a. lunch time!)
  • 69% happened between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
  • The 31% that occurred between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. caused 67% of recorded property damage, because they went undetected longer. This also highlights the need for automatic detection equipment and working sprinkler systems.
  • 19% of fires happened on weekends.

Cause of the Business Fires

  • 29% were caused by cooking equipment. However, just 6% of these fires caused actual property damage.
  • Intentionally-set fires caused the most direct property damage – 21%.
  • Electrical equipment is the second leading cause of office fires.
  • Just 2% of office fires start in a concealed space like an attic, in the ceiling, or in another conceals space. However, these fires accounted for 13% of the direct property damage.

Containment & Putting it Out

  • 4 out of 5 fires were confined to the room of origin.
  • 90% of fires were large enough to activate sprinklers, which were effective 88% of the time.
  • Deaths per 1,000 stores were 62% lower in offices equipped with sprinklers compared to those without.

Industrial/Manufacturing Facility Fires

The NFPA also has statistics specific to manufacturing facilities. According to their research, there are about 37,000 fires at industrial or manufacturing facilities each year, resulting in 18 deaths, 279 injuries, and $1 billion in property damage. Heating equipment and stop tools were the leading cause – sparking 28 percent of the fires. Mechanical failure or malfunction caused 24 percent of the fires.

To Clean or Not To Clean?

8/27/2018 (Permalink)

Indoor air can get polluted with dust, allergens, and other small particles. If you are concerned about your indoor air quality, you might benefit from having your air ducts cleaned. Having your air ducts professionally cleaned may make a difference in the overall quality of your indoor air. And, cleaning your air ducts may also help your HVAC system function more efficiently.

When it comes to air duct cleaning, homeowners often have many questions. Here are a few of the most common:

Does a professional air duct cleaning really make a difference?
A professional air duct cleaning can benefit you in more than one way. First, the cleaning will remove dust, debris and other pollutants from your air duct system. This can be beneficial to anyone living in the home who suffers from allergies, has breathing problems, or is sensitive to pollutants. Second, clean air ducts can result in a more efficient HVAC system. When your home’s ventilation system is clean, it can function more efficiently – which may ultimately save you money on your monthly energy bill.

How often should I have my air ducts cleaned?
Unless you are in the midst of a home renovation project or you live in an area with extremely high pollution, you should not need to clean your air ducts more than once a year. In fact, after your air ducts are professionally cleaned, you may not need another thorough cleaning for several years. For advice on how often you should have your air ducts cleaned, make sure to ask your air conditioner repair company. If the air conditioner company does not offer air duct cleaning services, they should be able to provide you with the name of a reputable company to call.

Can I clean the air ducts in my home myself?
Many homeowners wonder if they can clean their home’s air ducts with their own vacuum cleaner. In reality, it is practically impossible to clean an air duct system with a regular vacuum. Air duct cleaning companies use special equipment that is designed to specifically clean air ducts. As a homeowner, one of the best things you can do to prevent pollutants from infiltrating your air ducts is regularly change your HVAC system’s air filters.

Is a professional air duct cleaning expensive?
The cost of air duct cleaning services varies. Factors that are taken into consideration when an air duct cleaning company provides you with a quote include the number of air ducts in your home, the age of your home, the length of time since the air ducts were last cleaned, the current condition of the air ducts, and more.

The benefits of servicing your HVAC unit include:

  • Helps to restore peak energy efficiency.
  • May help to eliminate offensive odors.
  • Helps reduce the potential for mold growth.

For more information on HVAC and air duct cleaning, call SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Lands today at 662-289-7473.

Indoor Air Quality

Air Duct Cleaning, HVAC Cleaning | SERVPRO Industries, Inc.

Ventilation systems are often the biggest culprit in poor indoor air quality. Make it a priority to inspect the ductwork of your business.

If your HVAC has been operating for some time without attention, it could be circulating odors, dust and other contaminates.

SERVPRO Franchise Professionals routinely inspect the heating, ventilation and air conditioning unit (HVAC).  Keeping them clean can extend the life of the equipment. This can in turn save you money and give you cleaner air to breathe.

However, duct cleaning is not always necessary. SERVPRO Franchise Professionals will make recommendations about the best way to address any indoor air quality concerns. This can save you money and provide peace of mind on the health of your system.

The benefits of servicing your HVAC unit include:

  • Helps to restore peak energy efficiency.
  • May help to eliminate offensive odors.
  • Helps reduce the potential for mold growth.

MSU IDay

SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Lands had the opportunity to participate in the 31st annual iDay at Mississippi State University hosted by the Risk Management and Insurance Program at MSU. They had 2 days of continuing education classes which were great. They also offered a tour of the Newly renovated Dudy Noble Baseball field so we could be some of the first to see some of its new amenities followed by a barbecue dinner at the Bryan building. They also hosted a Golf Tournament on the beautiful Old Waverly course in West Point which is always first class. The event drew insurance professionals from all over the southeast, almost six hundred from over fifteen states. They featured several key note speakers from across the industry covering everything from health care to distracted driving and everything in between.  They also featured two local speakers that drew a good crowd, Neil Price, voice of the bulldogs and Joe Moorhead, Mississippi State's new Head Football coach.  The best speaker personally to me was Kevin Elko, spoke about how to achieve greatness in work and life. He was a great speaker and I'll leave you with one of his quotes, "all great people do one thing, they finish what they start."

VA Tailgating

Veterans from the Kosciusko Facility enjoying a day of tailgating.

SERVPRO of Northeast Delta Lands brings football to our local Veterans Home.  Tents, football players, cheerleaders and band are all onsite to help the Hero's of our country celebrate.  On October 14, 2016 we had our 2nd annual VA Tailgating.  Everyone had a great time and we can't wait til next year.

The people of the United States have a tradition that those who served our country in the armed forces, especially in time of war, shall receive consideration and care when they are in need.  The Mississippi Veterans Affairs Board is extending this special kind of care through a partnership with the VA.

We salute these efforts and hope our event helps, even if in a small way, to honor and support our Veterans.
